Arch Rant :)

There is no goal to this rant, I just want to express my gratitude smile.

I've been using Linux since 2000. I make my living as a Programmer and needed a "flexible" OS. So, I started out with Debian, loved it. Then I wanted to see what this Ubuntu hype was about, I loved it as well, it was like a more desktop-oriented version of Debian ... But Ubuntu started becoming a "devil" to me after Breezy release and after I started to become a more advanced user.

Ubuntu changed into something I loved to something I hated I wasent proud to say I used it ... Why? because it started to become bloated and full of stuff I dident need and I felt restricted; I missed the simplistic aspects of it and Debian.

I continued using Ubuntu (although constantly distro-shuffling on other partitions) because I had nothing else to turn to that meeted my needs. But then, a friend told me about Arch Linux earlier this year ... and it opened up my world.

Arch Linux gave me the freedom of unrestricted happiness. I was free to install what I want, when I want and how I want without the bloat or restrictive chains. Pacman blew me away at its easiness and increadable flexibility and speed plus with the amount of packages available in Arch and AUR.

Not only is Arch itself great, but the people behind the community of Arch Forums and AUR and such are phenomenally helpful and dedicated; not to mention smart.

So in conclusion: I am proud to say I use Arch Linux as my OS and I cant express my gratitude enough to the people who make it all possible smile

Thanks.
PS: Not sure if this is the right forum for this, slap me if it is not tongue

Re: Arch Rant :)

I join the rant, as an ex-Ubuntu user. It's still a great OS, but well, Arch is the greatest for me smile

Re: Arch Rant :)

I can recognize some users from the Ubuntu Forums (hey finferflu smile )

I'm also a Ubuntu user, soon to be ex-user, and I have to say that I found my distro (at least for now).

This one is a keeper

LOL! That was funny smile

I can recognize some users from the Ubuntu Forums

Arch has a lot of ambassadors spreading the good word about arch linux in "Other OS talk" (ubuntuforums.org). It's a natural step to take if, and when, you outgrow the ubuntu pants...

There is no goal to this rant, I just want to express my gratitude

Good rant btw!

Re: Arch Rant :)

I have somewhat of a similiar story, except I used Arch before Ubuntu. Went from Arch to Windows (WoW didn't work so well under WINE until recently) then I used Ubuntu for a few months once I found that WoW worked under WINE well. After readjusting to the "linux way" after almost 2 years of using Windows, I found myself missing the simplicity and control of Arch. Also, I was getting annoyed with the complexity of the debian packaging system, and having to install seperate development packages for each package I wanted to compile something with!
Installed Arch, and now that I have everything I could possibly want, I don't forsee ever leaving Arch. smile

I still post on the Ubuntu forums occasionally, but I much prefer the smaller, closer feeling of the Arch community.
I guess it's true what they say... once you go Arch, you'll always come back wink

If you ever leave, that is tongue

I used Gentoo previously, but then I got a new computer and didn't feel like going through the time-consuming install, so I decided to try Arch instead since I'd heard a lot of good things about it. In a way it feels similar to Gentoo (the way the file system is laid out and that you don't absolutely have to install anything but the base packages, to mention two things), so I felt right at home from day one. Not to mention that the Arch community is great!
