some problems with gnome and sound

I'm having trouble running Gnome with a normal user account  - it simply fails to start. When i run gdm from the root account it works as charm. I tried xfce4 and it doesn't have that problem. What can i do in order to run Gnome from accounts with no su privileges ?
And the other problem is related to privileges. When i try to run xmms with my normal user account it doesn't play any sound, but if i'm root it runs flawlessly. I read in the forum about an audio group, will that solve the problem ?

Re: some problems with gnome and sound

I use KDE, but I had sound issues too when I tried Gnome, and just couldn't get it to work right (One of the reasons I use KDE) but if I remember correctly, I needed to install the esd sound daemon and add it to /etc/rc.conf to get sound in gnome.

You need to have root privileges to start GDM.  Add it to the end of your list of daemons in /etc/rc.local like so

DAEMONS=(syslog-ng cpufreq network netfs crond ipw3945d portmap fam dbus hal alsa hplip cups samba gdm)
