########################## AUDIO OUTPUT ########################
#
# MPD supports many audio output types, as well as playing
# through multiple audio outputs at the same time. You can
# specify one or more here. If you don't specify any, MPD will
# automatically scan for a usable audio output.
#
# See <http://mpd.wikia.com/wiki/Configuration#Audio_Outputs>
# for examples of other audio outputs.
#
# An example of an ALSA output:
#
#audio_output {
# type "alsa"

############################# MIXER ############################
#
# MPD needs to know what mixer settings to change when you
# adjust the volume. If you don't specify one here, MPD will
# pick one based on which ones it was compiled with support for.
#
# An example for controlling an ALSA mixer:

#mixer_device "/dev/mixer"
#mixer_control "PCM"
#
# If you want MPD to adjust the volume of audio sent to the
# audio outputs, you can tell it to use the software mixer:

#mixer_type "software"

And when I run mpd with sudo, here's what I get ...

[mary@myhost ~]$ sudo mpd
cannot open music_directory "/var/lib/mpd/music/" (config line 5): No such file or directory

Why is it not looking in ~/music?  The folder this there ...

Thanks!

Re: mpd won't follow my configuration ...

The /etc/mpd.conf file overrides the ~/.mpd.conf file.

Re: mpd won't follow my configuration ...

I thought it was the other way around.
You might also want to change the "user" setting to your username.

Don't run it with sudo, no need to.

Re: mpd won't follow my configuration ...

~ is the home folder of the user it's running as, which you have set as mpd. If you want it to point to your own home folder, you need to either use the full path or tell mpd to run as your user.

Re: mpd won't follow my configuration ...

Once you run mpd as root, it uses the /etc/mpd.conf file.  If you run it as a user, it runs the ~/.mpd.conf file.  Here is a copy of my /etc/mpd.conf for reference.
