Well hello there,
First off all: I'm a Linux beginner and i got some problems wich i havent found in the forum yet.
Alright, i bought a new Laptop from an Internetshot and it just arrived today. much is working flawless but there are 2 problems.
First the wireless module dont work but thats harmless. i should have handled it in a few hours
The bigger problem is that my DVD-RW Drive dont work.
I booted from the Arch Linux CD ("0.8") and it started the installer shell. (from where you have to type /arch/setup )
after the boot the dvd-drive wasnt working anymore. i cant choose the sources from CD and there was nothing in /dev.
So i installed the system via ftp/internet. So i end up here and i have no idea what to do. I tried hal and udev but it doesnt worked.
some datas from uname: 2.6.21-ARCH #1 PREEMPT Mon Jun 11 23:47:51 CEST 2007 i686 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7300 @ 2.00GHz GenuineIntel
my system:
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Prozessor T7300, 2x 2.0 Ghz (Santa Rosa)
2048MB DDR2 PC667 Ram
512MB NVIDIA® Geforce® 8600M GT
160GB harddisk 5400rpm
Intel® 965PM Chip
DVD-RW (8x +/- R/RW) Dual Layer
And I'm running Gnome 2.18.2
Thats all i know. I dont know where to find more informations, so tell me pls
Thanks for your time and help

So what exactly does not work? Does it not show up on the Desktop when you put in a CD/DVD? Can't you mount it? Also, there are three Setup-CDs. Which one did you use? 0.8 isn't exactly fresh, you know.
Basically, most DVD-RW Drives "just work" without further tinkering. You need to be a little bit more precise of what did not work after the installation.
Todays mistakes are tomorrows catastrophes.

I downloaded the 2007.05 Base version of Arch Linux "Duke"
And the DVD-Drive isn shown up anywhere. neither on desktop nor in /dev
I could post you an startup log if i would know where it is.
I could start the arch linux installer. after the boot and befor the installation there was no dvd drive anymore. like said above.
Well i try to reinstall the system. maybe it works
Edit: I just started Knoppix from DVD and it works. the drive is shown there =/
Edit 2: The Bios Boot menue tells me that it is a 3S-Philips SPD8004P1

hi!
Is your laptop an LG R500? The specs look just the same as mine
I had to boot from cd with parameter "ide-legacy", then I could access my dvd-drive. It's actually installing right now
try that
