Hello - an introduction

Hello Archlinux people smile,

I am coming to Arch after a few years with one of the very popular source distros.  cool
I thought I wanted something simple, so I had a look at Ubuntu and PCLOS.  I didn't
like what I saw.  So, I gave Debian a try.  But, honestly, the Debian experience isn't
very gripping.

I use Fluxbox, so any distro that makes that harder than it should be is a real drag.

I have had a look through the archlinux forums and wiki.   Looks very good.
Perhaps I'll get into it enough to contribute.

Arch linux looks suitable for many uses: file & print servers,
simple internet servers, virtual servers (i saw it offered on linode.com, where i'm currently running
ubuntu server), workstations and laptops.  Is this true?  Especially laptops

Re: Hello - an introduction

Hi,
just a few words from me. If you do a base installation, then you have a minimalistic Linux, without X or other daemons running, just the necessary ones. You are right on a shell, that's all. After that you can install and do what ever you want with your installation. Just for your needs.

Runs here fine on a Samsung X20 (i686) laptop and on my Core2Duo (x86_64) workstation...

Re: Hello - an introduction

Hello ristretto, I never had any real problem with my laptop (well, if you scan the forums you'll find that I had some hassel with wifi... but that was my own stupidity...). If you don't belive in us now stated that it'll work, visit this thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=22816 (to avoid this thread to become a long list of "it works for me, yey!"-thingy).

When it come to the distro itself I can tell you what many others surely would say, it's simple and clean  smile

Re: Hello - an introduction

OK, Can't believe how relieved i am to find this distro.  I have been running Gentoo solely since 2005.  It's on my workstation, home LAN and a old laptop.  I even had it on a VPS for a while.  It worked great for a long time and would still be excellent if I had the time.

Gentoo just doesn't scale well enough for me.   I don't really care if some defaults are choosen for me.  I do care what apps I use.   So, Arch is the ticket.  And it seems so much fresher than Debian.

I have a bunch to learn.  So back to it ....

Thanks to the devs and this community.  I've been searching the forum already for answers.  cheers!!!
