freenx: how to access a server

hi guys,

i am currently trying to access a freenx server via the nxclient. obviously everything works, because in the nx session administrator the session appears (pls see screenshot). both machines are running current arch and i installed freenx server and client from the arch release.
the problem i have is that i do not receive a window with the remote machine. maybe i am too stupid and do not understand the principle, but i really have no clue to get this shit done.

it is again me. i saw a lot of posts similar to mine, but without any solution.

is there any freenx expert, who is able to tackle this problem?

Well it worked for me after changing some kde settings in config to off.

Try in kde or tweak ssh / freenx / firewall settings. But it should work although i admit that the package almost drove me insane too

Yuo have seen the freenx wiki haven't you? alse check google for other wikis to see if you missed something.

thx for answering. i do not use kde. i am running gnome on the client and openbox on the server i am trying to access. in the client's config i chose 'openbox', 'exec openbox' and 'exec openbox-session' in the config or just simple command line access. but anyhow... no damn window with anything opens.

of course i checked wiki, google and other manuals, but everywhere similar problems but no solution.

i really start getting nuts. is there any reliable log, which i can study to get this crap done?

Greetings to Finland!!! If you would describe your solution a little more detailed you would be my hero! Freenx also drives me nuts and out of the box it neither works with KDE, Gnome or XFCE4. Could you file a bug report?

Well flattery will get you anywhere it seems.

I just installed freenx again to check i wasn't totally full of bs.

Well it does work both gnome and openbox.

Make sure you follow archwiki for freenx closely, check that ssh really works and you can 'ssh user@host' succesfully.
ie copy client / server keys to correct locations.

I couldn't get gnome to work some time ago (on my first try, made a post here and someone suggested deleting / changing some kde deps to make gnome work) but now gnome seemed to be the easiest choice. from gnome to gnome.

To connect from gnome to openbox I used the following nxclient settings (I wasn't logged in ob on the remote pc tho, don't know if it makes difference but there seems to be some settings about sharing the same desktop/ session on both remote / local)

Desktop: unix, custom. Settings: run the default X client script on server (ie I think thats the remote machine .xinitrc that loads conky tint and execs openbox) then Options New virtual desktop

Also terminate all previous (unsuccesfull) running sessions if any before connecting.

But it does work tho and what a nice app it is

EDIT: too bad tint doesnt seem to work in freenx
EDIT2: wonder how I could connect to an already running session, ie control the already running laptop session without launching the wm/de again...

hi again,

i got it! the funny thing is, i installed openbox on the client and what do ya thing... it worked. without changing the settings.

well, that's really strange. and with the first successfull login it works from the other clients winxp and linux as well.

so i am sorry, but i cannot provide any log, which helps solving this prob generally.

Yipeeee it works! No problem with KDE, but funny behaiviour with XFCE4. With XFCE4 top bar, side bar and background appear in 3 separate windows! Each application opens a further windows. It looks unwanted but actually it is not so bad. Almost like a full integration of remote NX applications on my desktop. :-)

There are different ways to get freenx to work with XFCE. In the client when you set Unix/Custom, you have two options in the settings area: Floating window/new virtual desktop. If you use floating window you will get multiple windows for the panel, topbar etc, othewise there will be single desktop running XFCE.

Also, make sure that if you are not installing KDE, then set KDE_PRINTRC="$HOME/kdeprintrc" or something like that since the freenx scripts have a bug that look for this directory even if ENABLE_KDE_CUPS=0. This will need to be set in the server node.conf which resides in /opt/NX/etc.
