Abiword 2.4.5 shuts down, when I open a *.doc file, created with Word 2003. I tried different documents, but it's still the same. Abiword closes down without any error message.
When I open the documents with Open Office, I don't have any problem (apart from the ugly font-rendering).
I wondered, whether or not abiword-plugins are needed, so I tried to install them.
pacman -S abiword-plugins

I open the documents from different locations: USB-stick (vfat) and hd-partition (ext3). Does anybody have similar problems with the up-to date abiword?
Best regards

I have logged this problem as a bug, because everything works fine, when I compile abiword with the command "bash abiword-2.4.5.x86.package", the package from abiword.com.
However I must say, I have deleted the files, mentioned in the error-message above, beforehand.

Yep, same "*.doc crash" bug here...

It's not a bug, it's a feature. Word documents are evil.

Yup, they are right up there with images in signatures.

Yep, had the same problem on two boxes.
I had to switch to OO to open evil  docs

I didn't have any problems to open the same "evil" word-document with Zenwalk abiword (apart from some special characters which are a bit "changed" now). Is it possible, that -again- a certain dependancy problem exists, which occurs in certain situations (depending on "evil" word-documents)?

AbiWord shuts down when opening .doc files here too

Sorry for the bump but I'm having this problem too. Any hints?
EDIT:
I made a new package with 2.4.6 source and without --with-libxml2 --disable-gucharmap --with-sys-wv flags and it's working fine.

I was getting the same problem, so I switched to OpenOffice.org. I'd recommend it.

The guy who is in charge of the abiword package really should update it to the last version.

I too have had this problem. Abiword *and* OO both just crap out if I try to open a .doc document. The only way I have found around around this is to email it to myself (using gmail) and have it converted to html so I can cut&paste it to abi or OO.

I'm having this problem with some .doc files. Same files work fine on Xubuntu's AbiWord.

I used to have the same problem and resolved it by downloading and installing the app from the Abiword website
http://www.abisource.com/download/
However, have installed most recent package and it seems to work fine.
Hope this helps

Like others, I was able to get Abiword to open .doc files by uninstalling the arch package for abiword and then compiling abiword from source. I don't know whether the problem is that the arch package contains an older version (2.4.6 vs. 2.5.1) or whether it has to do with compiling the app on one's own system.
