Yesterday, I've tried to install Arch Linux, atracted by its speed and by its up-to-date package. But I've got a problem when I boot my computer. It prints some
hdc: IRQ probe failed (0xffffbdfa)
and then a lot of
ide-cd: cmd 0x5a timed out
and
hdc: lost interrupt
. It finally finds my DVD-reader/CD-writer, but it takes about 15-20 minutes. It's not a hardware problem since I had no problem with other distributions (naming Debian, Knoppix and Gentoo). As I'm pretty new to AL, I don't really know how it works, so if anybody had a clue...

Hello bobzomer!
Did you manage to install arch or not? I don't get it.
If not,it could be a bad disc,I had trouble myself with other distributions.
You only need arch-base iso to do it,after that it's only to pacman what you want.
I use only the ftp install myself since I got a fast internet line.
But no matter what, you got to be able to boot whatever install option you chose.
Hope you manage it.
Good luck!
arch + gentoo + initng + python = enlisy

I managed to install AL. The only problem is, now that it's installed, when I boot up my computer the kernel or whatever is launched at boot up, complains about hdc irq and and ide-cd timed out cmd. My computer runs pretty good, but the boot up takes 20 minutes (watch in the hand).

That's the same for me. I finally solve the problem by downgrading my kernel 2.6.4. Kernel bug?
Offline
fatal bug.
same problem here,
never tried waiting more than 10mins.. arch just hangs
2.6.5-2 killed my arch dead
2.6.5-1 was ok
Off to using Peanut and Slackware, no hard feelings but I need my CD to burn, PDA and scanner to connect and arch won't do it.

Have the same problem with my CD-ROM.
kernel 2.6.3 couldn't mount the cdrom but atleast it booted
kernel 2.6.5 wouldn't even boot with cdrom plugged.
so how do we get back into arch booting?
I had to unplug my cdrom, you can boot to arch using the floppies then downgrade the kernel back to 2.6.5-1 if its still there in the cache

Workaround? http://kerneltrap.org/node/view/3070#comment-8787 I don't have this problem but I have acpi=off for other reasons.
EDIT: more info about APIC and handling irqs here http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/docs/lkml/#s13-4
I hope this will help you solve your problems.

Now I can also confirm that this happened to me too. It happened when I tried to turn acpi=on. With acpi=off in my grub config this problem disappears. I also added this workaround to the bug report.

I seem to be having some real issues with this kernel and my system. I think they are ACPI related as my CD and Hard Drive work well on a boot but after a period of time the performance degrades. CD missreads and my main partition which is a Reiserfs partition corrupts. Tried to compile a custom kernel without ACPI and my system suffered a kernel panic trying to use /dev/discs/disc0/part1 as my root partition (hd0,0)
Ended up reinstalling Arch and looking to use a script to build a 2.6.4 custom kernel.
Also suffering problems with my Saitek X45 under both the 2.6.5 and 2.6.6 kernels. Device is recognised but the thing doesn't register any movement through the buttons, hats or axies. Lots of frustrating fun. At least 2.6.4 worked. Will have to keep my ears to the ground with further kernel releases and be more careful with upgrades like keeping my old kernel and modules around with the install of the new kernel.
Also find ESD in Gnome to be totally useless. Gnome= pretty desktop but seing all the music apps and tools seem to be written for KDE I might take a look at that. I ran it briefly and was supprised to have ARD (I think that is the sound deamond for KDE) work automatically. I prefer functionability over looks so I will have to see which offers me the most for my needs, Audio and Gaming.
Leave ones footprint not in the physical world but the in the world of the mind.

Yes now I discover lots of bugs or problems (like broken pwo driver for my webcam, problems running wacom tablet, all kinds of acpi/apic related things including the one above, unnecessary powering off the hd while reboot, etc.) but that's how it is with newest kernels. More people confirm this also on many maillists and forums. I also still have 2.4.26 kernel for the purpose of some emergency :-). There is now 2.6.7-rc1 uploaded to kernel.org see the changes
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/ … -2.6.7-rc1
or http://kerneltrap.org/node/view/3178
I don't have that much time to build some test kernel and check if all the bugs will go away with newer kernel versions but maybe someone is already testing it?
