Re: 32bit or 64bit

It supports both. For now I'd recommend 32-bit, as Arch64 is rather incomplete and a little ugly in places.

Re: 32bit or 64bit

what's ugly about 64bit?

and core duo doesn't support 64bit instructions afaik. Core 2 duo does.

Core Duo don't have 64bits support.

Re: 32bit or 64bit

The T5600 is a Core 2 Duo processor and supports EM64T.

I recently installed Arch64 on my new laptop (T7200).  It was quite stable, but some packages have not been ported to X86_64 (I forget which ones), and the Firefox plugins need wrappers and stuff to work properly.

I wanted something that worked straight out out of the box with no hassles, so I switched back to regular Arch (for now).  I don't feel like dealing with the "ugliness", as Gullible Jones put it.

Ciao

Re: 32bit or 64bit

Actually I was thinking more of the /lib64 stuff with regards to "ugliness". I don't know why that vexes me - it's harmless, even if it doesn't really comply with Arch standards - but vex me it does.

Re: 32bit or 64bit

no, i believe a core 2 duo would be 64-bit. either way id suggest 32-bit even if only to avoid firefox plugin issues.

Re: 32bit or 64bit

If you want to avoid problems with 32-bit-only software you should definitely go for the i686 version. Otherwise you could give the x86_64-version a shot, but do not expect it to be _way faster than the i686 version of Arch.

I suggest to stick to i686 for the next time at least, though.

Re: 32bit or 64bit

64 bit is great. I run it with no problems at all. Java, flash, codecs, all work fine. No real speed difference, but since everything that I need works, I use it.

Re: 32bit or 64bit

Only one thing, 64bit is much more memory hungry than 32bit. But it works great. wink
