Kernel 2.6.22: suspend-to-ram screen problems back with a vengeance

At some point in the past I remember complaining about my laptop's backlights staying off when I came out of software suspend. I managed to solve it by adding idle=halt to my grub entry.

Well, since updating to the new kernel in Testing, it's back. Removing idle=halt doesn't fix it. I also tried putting in acpi_sleep=s3_mode, and acpi_sleep=s3_bios when that didn't work... no dice.

Anything else I should try appending to the grub entry before downgrading or switching to a different kernel?

(Funny - looking at the functionality of idle=halt, it shouldn't help this suspend problem at all. I wonder what's indicated by the fact that, until recently, it was the only way I could fix this problem...)

Hmm, adding VBERestore to xorg.conf doesn't work either. Weird...

if it worked in 2.6.21 and not in 2.6.22, it's a regression. Complain to LKML, not us.

Re: Kernel 2.6.22: suspend-to-ram screen problems back with a vengeance

Thanks... I have found the problem though - apparently I have to hit return to get the monitor on again. No other key seems to work.

(The machine does hang for several seconds coming out of suspend though, I'm not really sure what happened with suspend but I think I might mention this on the LKML.)

Edit: Hmm, the return key fix only works properly if I use acpi_sleep=s3_bios. s3_mode results in a very long hang, and no acpi_sleep line prevents me from ever getting out of suspend. This is ugly.

I can't even get out of suspend anymore. When trying with acpi_sleep=s3_bios I get 3 letters "ini" in yellow on the top of the screen and that's it..

As is true for most people I know, I've always loved learning. As is also true for most people I know, I always hated school. Why is that?

Re: Kernel 2.6.22: suspend-to-ram screen problems back with a vengeance

fwiw, I came across this thread while experiencing the same issue..

I finally tracked it down to fglrx (binary ati driver) as the culprit.  So if you are having suspend issues, and have an ati powered video card, might be worth checking into.

Switching back to vesa (again... grr) solved the problem for me, for now.  Matter of fact, the more I think about it, I will probably just leave it as vesa.  Fglrx is only needed for 3d applications it would seem.
