It's probably a bit late to ask this, but is pentium 4 i686? I came across the i686 wikipedia article and noticed that it wasn't listed there.

Yes it is. i686 is supported on intel processors with versions greater than or equal to pentium II or compatible processors from other manufacturers.

Every 32-bit x86 processor since the Pentium Pro can run i686 software. The Pentium 4 isn't technically i686 (it uses the NetBurst architecture, sometimes informally known as i786) but it can run i686 software, just like i686 processors can run software compiled for i586, etc.
