Openbox + ATI X1400 + xcompmgr = SCREWED?

I've been digging through Google and the forums here trying to find a solution, but I'm fearing the worst.

I have an ATI X1400 and I would like to enable the xcompmgr composite manager for Openbox and still be able to play 3D games. Has anyone gotten this to work at all?

I don't really care whether I'm running the fglrx drivers, the official ati binaries, or the open source driver. My only concern is that I can enable the composite manager and still be able to play games like Half-Life 2.

Well you can't.

its either fglrx and xgl or composite and opensource ati drivers.

Got the same problem you see... ati just sucks.

oss drivers are crap fps no tvout its not an option for playing games.

I've been thinking of installing both xgl+compiz, for eyecandy and normal x for games and whatnot.

Well that bites! LOL

But are you saying it's possible to run xcompmgr under one session, and normal X under another?  If so, that'd be fine by me!  I don't play 3d games that often (but I do play them)

Would you happen to have any bookmarks that would point me in the right direction?

I'm not sure, I tried to use XGL with xnest / xlaunch and whatnot and it should work on nvidia atleast but i remember reading that ati is so crap that it doesn't even support multiple x sessions and whatnot (I found a new favorite word whatnot).

Opensource drivers are nice for desktop use tho, just tvout needs an external program and google-earth and games crawl and have weird graphic anomalies... and whatnot.

Edit:

Oh yeah almost forgot that toying with xgl, xlaunch seemed to cause lots of black screens / hangups and whatnot for me.
So you might want to enable "Raising Elephants Is So Utterly Boring" first, had to do the echo command in Arch. (wish i knew about this command before...)
