2 unrelated questions: compositing & fonts

so i just go arch on my laptop.

1.  Compositing -- beryl ran on my laptop, and when it did (under ze Ubuntu, with open source driver) the transparency effects worked fine, and didn't peg the cpu at all.  For my new arch installation, I am using the composite extension with X and e16, but performance is so bad the system is unusable.  Is there any way to get simple compositing working?  I have an ati m300 card.  I would expect that if the compositing/drop shadows of beryl worked under open source driver (with aiglx), then compositing should be no problem--the card certainly has enough juice to do what i want.

2.  Fonts.  I downloaded the ms fonts and the artwiz fonts (meaning pacmmanned them), ran fc-cache, but I dont have access to the fonts (i tried aterm -fn snap).  On the other hand, firefox was butt ugly before i downloaded the ms fonts and now it looks much better.  When I try to add the fonts' dirs to my xorg.conf, x wont even start (I reran fc-cache).  How do I resolve this?

Thanx in advance
