Video Thumbnails in GNOME? [SOLVED]

Hey everyone,

I just installed my GNOME desktop, a basic one to add things as I need them.  I installed VLC and would like to use that as my default movie viewer, but noticed that video thumbnails were not working.  I installed Totem to see if that would resolve it, but they still didn't show up.  The Nautilus preview settings are on.

Is there a way for the thumbnails to work with VLC?  And if not, does anyone have some advice on how to get them to work with Totem installed?

logout & login ? or maybe you need gstreamer

Hmm, no, I tried even a full reboot, and I made sure that GStreamer and the MPEG plugins were installed. 

Honestly, the thumbnails and audio previews aren't a huge deal, I always disabled them in Windows to speed up explorer.exe.  But wouldn't mind them in Linux since I never had the same kind of slowdown like in XP.

For video previews install totem-xine and the codecs package.

For audio previews try installing mpg321 and vorbis-tools. It used to be that way a while back; don't know if things have changed (it's bothersome when you have a large collection of music).

Thanks for the input.  I tried totem-xine last night and it relies on the codecs package so both are installed, but still no go.  I'll try the others for audio preview just for testing purposes, but audio preview annoys me when browsing files anyway and something starts playing over what I'm listening to.

If totem has failed once to create a thumnail once, it want try again. To fore it to retray (after you have installed more codecs) delete ~/.thumbnails/fail.

That did it!  I didn't know that about GNOME/Totem.  I deleted the ~/.thumbnails/fail directory and the thumbnails loaded right up.
