Enlightenment

I need help with Enlightenment (standard, not this beta).
1. I made pacman -S entrance, put it in DAEMONS, and in ~/.xinitrc, but it still doesn`t want to start with boot-up

2. when i type "startx" i can see enlightenment logging system, i put my username and password... and then i got an error (tragicall music here)

Failed on: xyzk(/opt/e17/share/entrance/themes/default.edj)     -->ergh.. e17? entrance is e17 only?

Enlightenment cannot connect to the display nominated by your shell`s DISPLAY environment variable. You may set this variable to indicate which display name Enlightenment is to connect to. It may be that you do not have an Xserver already running to serve that Display connection, or that you do not have permission to connect to that display. Please make sure all is correct before trying again. Run an Xserver by running xdm or startx first, or contact your local system administrator, or Xserver vendor, or read the X, xdm, and startx manual pages before proceeding.

3. What works best with enlightenment? I mean apps etc.

You did a whole lot of stuff wrong. Let me tell how I do it.

First, install enlightenment via pacman -S enlightenment. Now you have several options. The best bet is definatly to put enlightenment (or the startup-wrapper, I don't know if this one was under e17 or under 16 but if you take the wrong executable, it will tell you during startup so just trial and error) into your .xinitrc with something like

exec enlightenment

Now after you have done that, I see that you want to use a Login-Manager. The easiest way to do this is, IMHO, to install slim via pacman -S slim and then adding slim to your DAEMONS in /etc/rc.conf

If you did it all right, the Login-Manager will start up upon boot-time. There you can enter your credentials and, in the case of slim, your .xinitrc gets executed and enlightenment starts.

A little on the ranty side: did you have any clue whatsoever before you did what you described above? Jesus, I mean: entrance in your .xinitrc? Give me a break!

yes, i tried this before, but it shows me :startx error: ~/.xinitrc : exec: enlightenment not found: or something like that. With "entrance" it at least showed up anything with startx

Oh what a scientific approach. And it did not occur to you that the executable could be named different? I am not using enlightenment but a quick shuftie over the package gave me /usr/bin/e16 which makes that

exec e16

And you couldn't find that out yourself?

hmm ok this was stupid mistake I think i get too used to mistakes where I can`t find solution anyway
