Internet cut out after update.

Here's a problem I don't even know where to begin with.  I'm currently typing from a SLAX LiveCD, as I cannot connect through Arch on the same machine.

I rebooted earlier, and upon logging in, found that my internet was completely down.  Well, not exactly; I had a few seconds worth of Google and MSN, but then I couldn't do anything.  I rebooted again, this time without starting X, and tried using links with the same result.  I then rebooted once more, and since then it seems that I don't even get the initial few seconds of net use.

I haven't changed anything in my previously working resolv.conf, rc.conf, or anything else.  All that I did was run an (overdue) update through pacman sometime yesterday, and I don't believe I rebooted since.  I can't give any information as I don't even know what would be required.  I  have tried using both my ISP's DNS servers and OpenDNS', though I didn't expect much as I can't even connect to my router.  All is fine here on SLAX.

I await any help possible whilst burning my eyes with this horrific resolution.
Thanks.

Edit:  Forgot to mention that upon the first reboot, errors were found in my home partition.  I had to run an fsck and hit Y a few times, in relation to missing inodes and lost+found.

If you suspect that your userfiles have somehow cripled your ability to access the Internet, you could try and make a new user. He would get a fresh homedir with untouched files. Then login as that user and see if your Internet works again.

Re: Internet cut out after update.

I couldn't even find out how to add a new user, but I'll try now that I'm back on SLAX with the internet as a reference.  Might be worth noting that the same thing happens when logged in as root.

Re: Internet cut out after update.

Okay, here's an update:

Created the new user, but it acted just the same in regards to any internet access.

Managed a little access to my router at one point, which let me login and refresh a few times.  Seems it's a matter of timing; if I'm not fast, I can't get the short amount of access.  Anyway, it still cut out.

Uncommented nameservers in resolv.conf, rebooted, and managed the same amount of time with google and any sites that popped into my head.  Just as I was going to go to another with the URL input box, "Disabling IRQ #18" showed up inside.  After that, access was once again cut.  I closed and restarted links, but it was still cut with the message "No route to host."

Remembered that I plugged in a USB gamepad yesterday, I removed that and rebooted.  I initially navigated to my router's login just fine, but didn't bother to login and went to a remote site.  After a short time, access was cut but I could still get to my router's login page (cache?).  Upon logging in, however, "No route to host."

So that's all the information I can think to give.  Surely IRQ #18 is a problem, I've seen it before after a few seconds of exiting links prematurely; it obviously won't display while links is running, unless I have some input box.

Hope this makes sense to someone out there.

Edit: While I have a very limited understanding of how IRQ works, it makes sense with what I do know.  Say, if my ethernet card is using IRQ 18.  In any case, I have no idea how to find out.

Re: Internet cut out after update.

You could try

ifconfig

before and after the cutof to see if your IP address disappers.

The command

route

will give you the address on the default route. And
as you already know

less /etc/resolv.conf

will display the DNS lookup servers.

I'm not altogether sure what causes this. Do you have more than one network card in the computer?

When you boot your computer, can you see what devices use IRQ18?

Re: Internet cut out after update.

Okay, I'm back with some results.

ifconfig showed the same results at both times, the only change being the obvious difference in transfer.

route displayed this:

Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface

dmesg | grep IRQ displayed this:

Disabling IRQ #18

Which quite clearly presents the problem, but I have no clue of the cause.  Also, I can confirm that the cutoff point is absolutely when IRQ #18 is disabled, as is logical.

Re: Internet cut out after update.

Possibly not the same issue as you but after updating yesterday I got a new kernel AND ipw3945 (wireless) package.  When I rebooted my internet was gone.  Actually my eth2 connection was gone.  Something in the update cause my eth0 and eth2 LAN connections to be recognized as eth0 and eth1.  After changing the wireless settings to use eth1 instead of eth2 all was well.

Maybe that'll help you and maybe not.

Re: Internet cut out after update.

I appreciate the input, but nothing seems to have changed along those lines for me.

Anyway, I have what seems to be a temporary fix!

I previously did dmesg | grep IRQ but not dmesg | grep irq.  So here was the output of the latter, after having IRQ 18 disabled:

ACPI: INT_SRC_OVR (bus 0 bus_irq 0 global_irq 2 dfl dfl)

While booting with the irqpoll option did nothing whatsoever, I remembered stumbling upon the option noirqdebug earlier.  I tried this, and it worked perfectly.  The last 3 lines were then omitted from the above, and IRQ 18 no longer disables.  However, because this shouldn't be happening in the first place, does anyone know where I should go from here?

Thanks.

Re: Internet cut out after update.

I suggest you write a bug report - or maybe wait and see if 2.6.22 (in the repos today) fixes it.

The update that broke it in the first place was 2.6.22.  First time writing a bug report, so I'll scuttle along and read about that.
