Does anyone know where Gnome/Metacity stores which wallpaper to use?

As I'm changing between one or two screens a lot, I'd like to write a little scriptlet, that activates the correct wallpaper on X startup (my normal Wallpaper is pretty messed up by Xinerama as I'm using two different resolutions). Therefore I need to know where gnome stores these informations.
I've found a $HOME/.gnome2/backgrounds.xml but it apparently stores only which wallpapers are available and how they were configured in gnome preferences, but it doesn't contain which one is the active wallpaper.

It would be nice to know where gnome stores which applications are started on gnome-session-startup, as I might want to change something according to the screen setup, too.

Hi saciel,
usually these information are stored in gconf database.
You can use gconf-editor to explore its content

Thank you! As gconf-editor provides a parameter-driven commandline-interface as well, it should be pretty easy to change the backgrounds from the command line. But I was not able to find a key that contains my session-autostarts.
