I'm using Arch 64 bit and when I try to run Stellarium from terminal I got this message:
[smith@smith-arch ~]$ stellarium
-------------------------------------------------------
[ This is Stellarium 0.8.2 - http://www.stellarium.org ]
[ Copyright (C) 2000-2006 Fabien Chereau et al ]
-------------------------------------------------------
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::bad_alloc'
what(): std::bad_alloc
Aborted
And the program refused to start. I also try running it from Run Application menu, which also does nothing.
Also GNOME didn't create Stellarium shortcut in the menu.

Do you get the same error running as root?
And have you tried the qt4 version in AUR?

Yes, I get the same error running as root.
Haven't tried qt 4 yet and see how it goes.
UPDATE: Install qt4 and try again. Didn't work either, got the same error.

I had the same error with the aeolus package (AUR). Never did track down the problem, although it works now.
Stellarium-latest works fine for me. Don't know what else to suggest apart from having a look though the forums for bad_alloc errors. Maybe someone else using Arch64 can confirm that Stellarium actually runs.

I try out Stellarium-latest (version 0.9.0) on AUR and it works for me too. Not sure what's wrong with the one in the repositories though.
Anyway, thanks for advice/suggestions, Cotton.
