No composite extension.

Are you using the fglrx drivers? You will need to set up Xgl. ATI's fglrx driver doesn't support AIGLX, which is annoying. You will have to set up a separate session for Xgl.

if you don't feel like using XGL, and you've got an ati card, then you can use the open-source drivers .... they work very well, even for games

or.... you could just use xcompmgr

Why did you start another thread:

Anyway, I'll post here (your original thread, instead of the dupe).
Per a comment by Forge42 on this Lifehacker article:

Re: Requiring compiz/beryl -- I think that the current version DOES require compiz/beryl. If you install AWN and notice a big black bar across the bottom of your screen, then you need to install a compositing software like compiz or beryl and the black bar should go away.
and from here:
http://max.limpag.com/2007/07/09/ubuntu … iz-fusion/
I installed awn using the repository and have not encountered problems with it since. You need either Beryl or Compiz to make it work. If you spot just a black screen, chances are you don't have either window manager running.
I don't know how strict his comment is intended. Perhaps [any] compositor / compositing window manager software should work, but maybe others aren't up to the task.
Maybe Phrodo_00 or someone else can clarify, hopefully through experience, that xcompmgr is sufficient.
Good luck.

Update
I compiled Avant Window Navigator "stable" from AUR and installed. Lots of bugs (inconsistent behavior, mostly) and lacking a lot of the features that most people are currently discussing (missing features are both functional and eye-candy).
So, I installed the AUR bzr version (similar to svn), and got all the newest features and much more stable behavior. Everything seems to work as designed in the little bit of testing I've done so far, but I don't really see what the big deal is about Avant. I'll play with it a while longer, but I don't think it's staying.
Anyway, again, good luck in getting your installation fixed up.

He didnt start another thread. I did. Did you even read the thread? I dont have the black bar issue at all! I just can't click on anything in that area of the screen that isn't part of AWN.... like the TITLE of MY post says, AWN DISABLES SCREEN
Any help on this? Refer to the thread in quotes for more info
Thanks-ish,

I have no real excuse for that. Somehow, I got caught up in researching AWN issues and getting ready for work and your problem (unclickable bottom part of screen) and Karsten's (black bottom of screen) got jumbled up.
I apologize for the confusion I caused (I'm 100% sincere, not just sincere-ish ).
