First of all, i had severe problems with graphical environments. Both xfce and gnome stopped working after some time (they just didn't boot after startx command).

newbie problems, could be fixed easily with some personal study combined with Google and different Linux forums.

Second, HAL only worked from time to time.

i HATE these kind of software. BTW, did you read the HAL page at ArchWiki ?

Then, i couldn't set ntfs partition to be viewable by a regular user, dunno why (there was always "user can't read this fs because it's read-only", sth like that).

seems like you want automatic configurations, like a newbie. you do not have much experience with GNU.

What i'm looking for is:
1. Minimalism!!

Arch is minimal

2. Stability

3. Speed

Arch is one of the fastest distros you will ever get.

4, Fairly good package manager

pacman rules boy :-)

based on your kind of mentality you should try these 3 before  Arch:   CentOS, Debian and Frugalware, exactly in that order.

well, i am also looking for such a distro, except i am not  fan of speed. right now i am using Arch with  annoying and frequent "X lockups".

I was a long time Debian user and I like it a lot...I don't know how is now but if you have testing or unstable distro IMO you woul work more than with Arch but the stable release is SECURE, stable.
I have just one OS, Arch but I like to try Frugalware...

Re: Arch alternatives

Ok, thx for the tip! I've only tried stable so far, and it's been working flawlessly smile

I'm wondering if you have an issue with your machine or if you are doing some sort of tweaking that's fux0ring things - for either arch or frugal to be "slow" is very strange.  The *only* distros I've ever run that are faster than either of those two are slack and slack polishers (like zenwalk).

You know, I haven't noticed any difference in speed between Slackware and Arch in the 2 weeks I've been running Arch. To me Arch is as 'snappy' as Slack. I just love it!
