Heh, heh... I'm enjoying this ! Arch is like Gentoo - but with soul.
Haven't had so much fun with Linux for a long time ! The pre-packaged,
supermarket distros are all very well but... they lack character. Arch is
Bart Simpson and Linus rolled into one !
Congratulations to the developers and community.

I agree. Arch is a great combination of cutting edge, control, functionality, speed, and is adaptable to a wide variety of hardware. Make changes and it performs as expected--what a concept.

Arch has a very simple configuration way and a powerful packages management system.
Those things are all I need.

I've switched from Gentoo to Arch yesterday as well. Although I disagree on the "fun" part here. I've had a lot of fun with Gentoo, but seeing how semester starts again soon, I need the notebook to be operational, so I can work with the computer instead of breaking it over and over again.
Note that I'm still kind of a super-newbie to *nix systems. Worked with DOS/Windows for all my life, and only recently decided that I wanted more from a system that Windows allowed me to do. Everyone kept suggesting Ubuntu, so I've tried that. Found it to be more of a "free Windows" than something I really wanted. Because Gentoo had customizability written all over its site, I've decided to give Gentoo a shot. Well, that and the fact that everyone went "Oh no, you really shouldn't install Gentoo, this is way too complicated".
Installed it, got a (more or less) running system and tried pushing it to the limits of my Linux capabilities (which are - to be honest - as minimal as they can be
). Fiddled around with Gentoo for around 2 months and I loved it.
After breaking my system for the ump-teenth time and complaining about the n-th re-emerge of application X, someone recommended Arch to me, which he labelled "basically like Gentoo, but with a binary option". Installed Arch, tried to use it like Gentoo and hated it. Went with Gentoo for another 2 weeks, and - after breaking the system again (silly me) - "accidentally" grabbed the Arch CD instead of my Gentoo stage 4.
Installed Arch, made sure to read the wiki this time around, and oh well, here I am. The more I use Arch, the more I'm getting to love it. It's just as fast as Gentoo, and I've found it to be highly configurable as well. I think I've found the distribution I can not only use to play with, but also to actually work with ![]()

Who's humble? The community or the developers? ![]()
