[SOLVED]Installed, can't start X

Hi. I currently use Ubuntu and have decided to give Arch Linux  a shot, mostly because I like the facts that Arch is lightweight.

Well, I install Arch without any problem. However, when I install and try to start the X. I got the classic "fatal error screen cannot found" the famous I got when trying to install Linux on a box with ATi card (sorry that I can't be more prescience, I'm using Ubuntu live CD to write this). 

I followed the HowTo on the Wiki, and manages to install the ATi Open Source driver, but still the X refused to start. I try to install fglrx driver, but still the X refused to start (giving out different error message).

Sorry that I can't give you error message, but I don't know how to save them and post them here.

I'm using ATi X700, which is listed as supported by Open Source driver.

The funny thing is Ubuntu Feisty Fawn work right out of the box! (or more accurately, upon inserting a live CD), using the "ati" generic driver with no configuration or tweak needed.

I also encounter the same problem when trying to install Debian, but in that case installing the fglrx driver fixed the problem and I was able to boot into X.

Can anyone help me with this? It's 4 a.m., and I've been working on the for all night. Thanks.

EDIT: Forget to mention this: I use stock kernel26 and I'm running amd64 build.

the livecd works because it does autoconfig on boot...

the logs are in /var/log/Xorg*

Sounds like you did not configure X.org. Ubuntu does that for you but Arch needs you to do this yourself.

I've created xorg.conf file using command "xorgconfig". I then selected my appropriated monitor/video driver from the menu. I didn't touch anything else in xorg.conf other than sections on monitor and driver.

Is that not enough? What did I miss then?

I also try using "hwd -x" command. But the result is the same (failure).

I also notes that when I configure the xorg.conf file to use Open Source driver or fglrx driver, the screen briefly show a blank "desktop" with cursor in the center before all went dark.

The error message I got from using Open Source and fglrx driver is different than when I use ATi generic driver ("ati"). It goes for some thing like: "waiting for Xserver to shutdown FreeFontPath: 1=P..." and something like that.

I will post a complete error message sometime tonight, even if I had to joint the entire thing on a piece of paper. wink

hmmmmmmmm. You have ati you say.

try using the fglrx driver and then if I am not mistaken the command aticonfig --initial or something like that. It should help.

Also posting your xorg.conf file would be helpful.

+ show the results of the

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep WW
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE

Have had similar problems many times and I suggest you do the following:

1.  Make sure that you have X installed, if not, then

pacman -Sy xorg

2.  Get rid of fglrx drivers for now and install the ATI drivers

pacman -R fglrx
pacman -S xf86-video-ati

3.  Configure xorg.conf
Device Section

Driver "radeon"

If radeon does not work, try vesa

4.  Make sure you have installed
- Desktop Environment

pacman -Sy xfce4 / GNOME / KDE

- Display Manager

pacman -Sy kdm / gdm

5. Using STARTX requires a ~/.xinitrc file, so that X knows what to run when it starts. Your best option is to copy /etc/skel/.xinitrc to your home directory and edit it

Start the Display Manager
As root, run

gdm / kdm

6.  If that does now work, have a look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log for lines beginning with (EE).  Post them here

You can also try X -configure and change the driver to flgrx

I think I have solution for you. First of all this is The only distro where I can use latest ATi 8.38.6 driver without problem with Xorg 7.2. With XFCE4 or GNOME interface on archlinux things are little tricky. If you don't want to much problem go with KDE. IMHO arch is taken more effort in KDE direction, but some things are also native in KDE. If you installed: pacman -S xorg. That's OK. Than use hwd -xa. Don't bother with warning.After that as sudo or root do this: cp /etc/skel/.xinitrc /home/your-user-name. Now edit .xinitrc file in your /home directory.nano .xinitrc. You will see something like this:

#!/bin/sh

#
# ~/.xinitrc
#
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
#

# exec startkde
# exec startxfce4
# exec icewm
# exec blackbox
# exec fluxbox

you need uncomment exec startxfce4, so it will look like this:

# exec fluxbox

I think that's it.;)

Before you do all that, download latest drivers: ATI driver_installer_8.38.6

After downloading.Do as root sh ati_bla_bla.run .If you are not in console, do that.Logout from desktop.Than in console do as root aticonfig --initial.That's it...Almost. Wait.Before startx do: pacman -S libstdc++5

Finally you can: startx cool

glxgears big_smile

Thank you for all the helps, guys. I FINALLY got it to work! big_smile

I use the Open Source driver (the "xf86-video-ati" one) and start the X using "gdm" command.

And what do you know, the works! big_smile The X window start and I was able to log into Gnome. The only problem is that I cannot login to X window as root and so has to create a user profile (is this normal?).

I still cannot start the X window using startx command though, not sure what's wrong with it. Is it ok for me to login using gdm and not startx? I might try out some other solutions that you guys suggested and see how it goes.

I have a similar problem... when I try "startx" i get:

FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/fonts/misc" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.

what to do?

[I use gf7100gs, nvidia driver and xorg.conf made with nvidia-xconfig, I have xorg-xinit already installed]
