Which kernel (patchset) to use now?

So now the kernel patchsets beyond, viper, and ck are gone. Which kernel should the desktop user who is looking for increased responsiveness and the lowest sound latency possible (without having to use JACK)? 2.6.23 is coming "soon," so I need to find something else. I'm sure a lot of other people are in the same situation as well...

I see that -mm is unstable, so I'd prefer to stay away from it.

Re: Which kernel (patchset) to use now?

I'm using self configured & compiled vanilla 2.6.22 kernel with Ingo Molnars' cfs v.19 scheduler patch. It can be downloaded from this page http://people.redhat.com/mingo/cfs-scheduler/

It has been already merged to upcoming 2.6.23 kernel, so I will be using vanilla again in future smile

Is there a arch repo for this for other builds such as fglrx-dark ?

No, you have to do it by yourself

Re: Which kernel (patchset) to use now?

I can confirm that 2.6.23-mm is not stable enough for everyday use. smile

What about ck? (till something else shows up)

Self configured vanilla with some patches added (fbsplash,vesa-tng,cfs)

Could someone post a pkgbuild or short wiki on the options to get SLUB and cfs enabled kernel or a realtime kernel would also be nice.

Re: Which kernel (patchset) to use now?

I wouldn't care about CFS at the moment, because Ingo did some patches in favour of CFS, which aren't reflected in this old patch in the above url to his homepage. So wait to .23, should be ready in some weeks.

Thats why now I'm thinking about trying 2.6.23-rc2 kernel.

Re: Which kernel (patchset) to use now?

It looks like I'll have to go back to the plain -ARCH kernel, then.. I'm fine with it, though, as it seems like most of what I liked has been more or less incorporated into it.

It seems like SLUB is the clear winner, so I'll probably have to recompile the kernel with that enabled. No big deal, really. Never compiled a kernel on Arch before, but I have on Gentoo and Debian.

Re: Which kernel (patchset) to use now?

I'm compiling and installing kernel in the old school way, like I did on Slackware. Now I have .23-rc2 kernel on my Arch box and it works flawlessly.

Still using -ck here, but I will go back to stock kernel upon release of .23.

Re: Which kernel (patchset) to use now?

Pierlo, who had an Arch repo for the viper kernel, has started his own patchset:
http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?d … hans=&SeB=

All the info's there on the AUR page: CFS and SLUB present and correct. smile Scroll down for details of his repo for the prebuilt package. I've only been running it for a couple of hours, but so far it seems comparable to viper. No big surprises, anyway (although judging from the comments, there might be teething problems with x86_64).

Re: Which kernel (patchset) to use now?

So I tried the pierlo set and I kept getting a kernel panic. I'm not sure if it was due to a misconfiguration (I always mess up the first time I compile a kernel) or if it had something to do with the fact that I stuck another harddrive in the middle of my group of drives.

I even made sure that ext3 was [*] and not [M] ....

I'll try again soon, but this time was scary. I'll have to download a Don't Panic iso.

i had a kernel panic too (with standard kamikaze as well)

it worked for me when i disable "Export DMI identification via sysfs to userspace (DMIID)" in "Firmware Drivers".

Re: Which kernel (patchset) to use now?

For anyone interested in dark patchset there are PKGBUILDs here:

Arch users wishing to use it should use the v86d and klibc PKGBUILD's at http://www.dcaf-security.org/abs/local/

I'm just using the stock -ARCH kernel.
