[SOLVED] X stopped working - all was fine... :(

Hello. Until yesterday everything went fine for me and my loved Arch. I didn't mess with my settings, was just using. But, today morning I turned the PC on, loaded Arch and... no KDM to start. Some time later, the console login window appeared. I logged in and tried startx (as user and as root), without any success. The screen "wants to load something", but returns to the console, and I can't retrieve warnings. I also tried startkde, but it gives a few warning messages, then shows a sort of help page, and quits. Unfortunately I don't know how to retrieve those warnings.

I even try, as root, a '/etc/rc.d/kdm restart', with same result as a startx.

In doubt, I have made a 'pacman -Suy' - useless, because I had already done that before sleeping smile and only a few very minor stuff was upgraded. No success. Even tried the Fallback kernel, no success. Desperately, even tried re-installing xorg and the nvidia driver; same "result".

No, I didn't mess with my xorg.conf - it is there as it was left, working for months without a change. Also, my video card is not damaged - I can run other distros just fine with full use of my video card.

Sorry, I have no clue how to get more info to help with my problem. Can I have some hints and then, when I get back home, I'll try them? Or did anyone experience something so stupid like this?...

hmm:/:mad:

Thanks in advance

Maybe there's some upgrade you installed that broke X. You might check /var/log/pacman.log and look, if packages in connection with X were upgraded.

Which repos do you use - especially testing? Which version of xorg do you have installed?

# version of xserver
pacman -Qs xorg-server
# version of nvidia driver
pacman -Qs nvidia

I just looked at. On the last upgrade before I turned the PC off (before the problem appeared), only this needed an upgrade (and got it):

I was using current, extra and community. When the problem came, I instinctively turned the testing repo on just to try and see if it fixes something, then 'pacman -Suy' and...

Re: [SOLVED] X stopped working - all was fine... :(

You might try downgrading xorg-server to 1.2.0.5 again.

pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xorg-server-1.2.0-5.pkg.tar.gz

It might help. Downgrading sdl_net might also be tried, but I do not think that it has any effect on X.

Well, I cannot realy downgrade them as I have the bad habit of cleaning my /var/cache/pacman/pkg from time to time, and last time I cleared was not long before the problems. hmm Maybe I should download the xorg-server and sdl_net manualy from the current repo and then downgrade it. Yes, I will do it and tell what happened. Will also downgrade nvidia.

Re: [SOLVED] X stopped working - all was fine... :(

OK, just downgraded xorg-server; the only one to downgrade, as it was the only one "ahead of time" compared to the current repository, so since I had next to none cache, was the only one I could download and downgrade. But the problem persists. hmm

By the way, the elinks broser is cool. smile

Re: [SOLVED] X stopped working - all was fine... :(

Should that help? Here is an excerpt from my /var/log/kdm.log file; the first half of it corresponding to the last session before the "crash" (everything working fine), and the second half is for the first tried session after. The blocks after that to the end are basicaly the same.

Re: [SOLVED] X stopped working - all was fine... :(

Looks pretty weird - I'm assuming you're using the same Xorg.conf?

I had some weird problem the other day where I tried to suspend to disk, then rebooted and all my X config files had disappeared! Tho, that was easy to fix - looks like your X is a bit broken for some reason. Wish I could help more!

Yes, my xorg.conf was not changed a single character for months, and it didn't change before or after the problem.

I just guess I'll do a fresh new install of Arch. Who knows this fixes my X. smile Yes, it is very weird!...

This happened to me yesterday as well. I ran

hdw -xa
aticonfig --initial

rebooted and all was fine....

Re: [SOLVED] X stopped working - all was fine... :(

I just did 'hwd -xa', reseted the nvidia driver stuff and reinstalled it, to no avail.

OK, let's do another clean Arch install. It's always fun, right? smile Now, downloading the Don't Panic ISO, so that I won't panic myself.

I consider this case closed.

Well... Go figure! Today I woke up and turned the PC on, loaded Arch for a last check... Now it decided to work all fine. hmm

Go figure! Murphy's law with us...?

Don't you just hate when it happens?
