problem installing on ASUS p5k se motherboard

ok the install goes like this,
gets to boot menu loads kernel run /arch/setup as normal, now selecting to install from cd and all works fine.

when i go to install packages from cd it turned out that the installer could not find the cd drive, so i reboot and look around and there is no /dev/dvd /dev/cdrom etc device found, dmesg doesnt seem to list it either.

more looking aruond and testing with other startup cds shows that this probably isnt an arch specific problem (ubuntu and gentoo disks do the same thing) but i thought it was a good enough place to start asking.

Yes i can install fine using a net install, but that still doesnt solve that i have no cd drive support, google so far has turned up nothing useful/related

the dvd drive is a PIONEER DVR-107D, set as master on the single IDE
winxp installed fine.

if theres any info in specific i could give to be helpful let me know though ive just trauled through dmesg and cant even see the dvdrom being detected

Edit:
tried installing with Archlinux-i686-2007.08-Don't-Panic.current.iso and Archlinux-x86_64-2007.08-Don't-Panic.current.iso
ATA controller is Marvell 88SE

Did you try the "ide-legacy" when installing from CD?

yeah i did doesnt help, and i have some more light to shed after some deep digging

it seems that the marvel controller is not supported by the linux kernel yet (sux to be me) the only possible solution offered was to try all-generic-ide as a boot option, ill give that a go and see if im lucky

try to enable ahci in the bios and add to modules "ahci" in mkinitcpio.conf

Is there any more information on this? I have similar issues and google reveals lots of potential candidates, none of which have worked for me. The OP says a netinstall worked. How? The netinstal still installs a kernel from the DVD/CD I thought before getting the rest of the network?

If anyone would step me through this I would be very grateful.

One thing : to the people that keep saying to change the IDE/SATA settings - there are no such changes to be made in the ASUS P5K SE Bios. The only SATA option is "enhanced" or "compatible".There is nowhere to set AHCPI mode. Or?

I have the same problem. There is no AHCI mode in this motherboard, the only SATA mode available is "IDE".

Is it possible to install from a usb stick or PXE?
If I use a SATA cd drive, will it work?

USB install works fine - and it's quick. Still, it seems that the Marvell IDE controller doesn't work.
