I recently botched up my partition table and lost access to my trusty and long serving Arch 0.7.1 (Noodle) install. Really dumb on my behalf, but I took the opportunity to load up the latest Arch, 2007.08 (Don't Panic). First of all, I *love* the name. I presume the "Don't Panic" is derived from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? No matter what, I love it.
However, what really impresses me is the speed. Arch has always been fast, but Arch 2007.08 feels a LOT faster than my old 0.7.1 install... and it was the fastest distro I had ever run on this machine. I am really, really impressed.
Of course, Arch has so much more to offer than just speed - an impressive package selection, a wonderful user community, a minimalistic "design the Linux YOU want" approach and so on, but at this point, I almost take those as givens. They are why there was not a moments hesitation wrt what Linux I would reload to replace my lost Arch 0.7.1 install. But the speed improvements! Nice! Icing on the cake, but really tasty icing.
Well done Arch team!
