at the End of september they will release OpenGL 3 (new clean API with some improvements) then after 4-6 months they will release new OpenGl version with Major improvements and technologies. OpenGL back on its traces after long peroid of stagnation?

I'm curious in how far it will be able to compete with the DX10 front. Would be cool if several game studios will further rely on OpenGL rather then DX - it's the cleaner and more user-friendly way, as it will more probably run on any platform.

While that's pretty cool and exciting, it makes me wonder how long until we'll see implementations of the new standard...

Its a pity the new unreal tournament 2007 won't be using it.

In all fairness, the spec was just released and the game/engine have been under development for a while now.

Well, it's not like all of a sudden every graphics driver is going to support OpenGL 3 as soon as the spec is released. Driver writers will need to create openGL implementations for their cards before anyone can make use of it.

Hmm you have right ,but i can bet Nvidia will do it preety soon. Nvidia is in Khronos group ,and it is one of main contributors so they've access to every specs all the time. Besides they've always heavily support OGL ,that's why i like them even tho they have closed drivers.

Obviously the engine won't support it, and they couldn't. Drivers and video cards for openGLl 3 won't be mainstream for quite some time I imagine. When I said its a pity I just meant it would be very cool to see ut2007 using it as its one of the few decent commercial games that run on linux.

Yeah, I kind of got the feeling that's what you may have meant awhile after I posted; maybe Epic will pull a 2k3->2k4 again and release an OGL3 game next year.
I Wonder if id has anything lined up to use it...

the nVidia 9xxx series (due out end Oct ) will have OGL3 support (as well as DX10.1).
OGL3 basically does what DX10 does and there was alot of negotiation to get OGL defined
The problem was HW vendors (ie nvidia & ATi) wanted a OGL3 (partly due to OGL2 stalled due to SGI fincial probs) , but their OGL3 would be specific and well... really went against OGL (would of ment that some games "designed for nvidia" would of ONLY worked on nvidia)
With OGL effectively been sold off OGL2.1 finnaly got release (virtually straight away) PLUS some strong-handed nagotiations with OGL future (ie OGL3) and well they worked
UT3 *could* be patched to use OGL3, it is suppose to be patched at a later date to DX10... so don't rule it out just yet. Epic are very pro-linux and they want their engine to be used alot (where they make their money)

Awesomeness, I hope mesa starts using this new version and the Arch package for mesa gets upgraded to it (which of course it will, Arch PKGBUILD writers rule). Will it have higher system requirements? Right now GLX/DRI just barely works on my 8MB card. I guess I will backup my current libgl-dri and mesa packages before upgrading them in case I have to go back. But yeah, this is cool.
