window focus

Hi and apologies in advance for this question - I'm pretty sure that it will have been asked before but I cant figure out what to search for.
This is my first time installing Arch (my last install was set up for me) so this would already have been taken care of.
My problem is:
If I want to navigate to /etc from the desktop, I would click 'computer' then 'filesystem' then 'etc' however, each time I change directories, a new window with the directory pops up so after what I have described, I would have 3 separate windows. One showing the contents of 'computer', one showing 'filesystem' and one with 'etc'.
What I want to know is how to set things up so that instead of three windows opening, the focus of the original window moves from 'computer' to 'filesystem' to 'etc'.

I'm sure there's a very simple answer and I have tried looking but I honestly haven't a clue what to search for.
thanks
Caillin
