Linux Desktop Survey

Hey everyone, I just stumbled across across a recently posted survey of Linux Desktop users here: http://www.desktoplinux.com/news/NS7943272425.html

I figured it would be useful for anyone who feels like tossing in a vote for ArchLinux like I did ^_^

Re: Linux Desktop Survey

Voted.
But it annoyed me that only 27.4% said they don't run Windows apps on Linux because it means the rest still needs windows.

Re: Linux Desktop Survey

Voted, and hey, if you can give me linux-native versions of the games I like to play, then I won't run Windows apps on *nix.  *shrug*

Re: Linux Desktop Survey

@hussam, nothing strange about that: we do not need Windows but we need its apps... that's all.

I know, it kind of threw me off-guard when I saw the results on the next page. I thought that was going to be the first of several pages.

Re: Linux Desktop Survey

I'm surprised to see Enlightenment going fairly strong (#5). I guess E users just aren't very loud about it.

I'm a little disappointed about the lack of Openbox as a choice, and I had to vote for Sylpheed because the Claws fork wasn't an option.

Same sad I would of thought openbox to be one of the most popular behind the DE's.

Re: Linux Desktop Survey

the last question was missing an option - dual boot. I still have to dual boot, as there's no way to run flight simulator x, combat flight sim, or pretty much any game I care for on linux.

for wm, today it's pekwm. It's a surprisingly powerful and capable wm.

Re: Linux Desktop Survey

I don't really run Windows stuff on my laptop. Since WoW always crashes everytime after entering the world (logging in and choosing character runs perfectly smooth, but that's way too off-topic now), there's no reason to run Windows apps for me. Using OpenOffice, KMail /Kontakt and the occasional OpenArena game to vent some steam wink

There's nothing wrong with needing to run windows apps, as long as you are able to do it without running windows. It's not the app I have a problem with (aside from not having a native version that needs to be emulated) but rather with windows itself.  I'm sure others will agree with this.

Btw: Voted

Re: Linux Desktop Survey

Someone must have overread this section:

NOTE: Participants are asked to refrain from promoting or advertising the survey to mailing lists, or encouraging friends or co-workers to vote for specific software choices. This will ensure that the survey represents a broad sample of Linux desktop users rather than being used to advance a particular open-source software cause.

BTW: Voted, and Kaze was missing in the browser-section.

Are there so many *box ? I only know three : fluxbox, openbox and blackbox.
Besides last blackbox release is from 2005. Only the two others are active.

Not necessarily, in fact it could mean less people use windows.  Instead of dual booting, they decide to run certain apps in linux.  For example, gaming.  I've played guild wars on wine before just so I didn't have to boot into windows and it was the only game I was playing at the moment.  I think it is a good sign.  I much rather have people emulate windows environment then actually use windows.

Frankly I meant openbox tongue  I've never used it but it must be better than the hack/bug fest that is fluxbox...

Re: Linux Desktop Survey

Well, the only windows apps people run are games (most of the time), everything else I can think of has an equal or better linux equivalent.
