Notification tray dockapp?

What program do you use as system tray?

I am looking for one that uses minimal space (ideally only the size of the icons) on the screen and that can be started NOT over all other windows.

Do you have any idea? The only one I found that does not put itself over all other windows is xystray but it is a little feature lacking...

Re: Notification tray dockapp?

no seriously... I would be able of hide it when I am not using it and let is use only a little space a possible... As far as I saw you can't do that with trayer.
(But I may be wrong since there is no man and the --help is totally uninformative)

trayer is as minimal as it gets.

See my post which sets you up with a very minimal trayer. No icons in the tray, no trayer is visible. If there's icons, thats all you see,

If you want autohide... you'll have a more difficult time, try using fluxbox, pekwm or just the gnome-panel, xfce4-panel or kicker.

Re: Notification tray dockapp?

You _can_ do that with trayer. You can order it to use only as much space as needed by the icon(s) and you can also tell it to be not above other windows but always below. It is all done via command-line-arguments and needs some trying at first but it works well after that. And you can make it totally transparent so you wont see anything of it when you are not using the tray. But if you want it to autohide or something like that, trayer is not for you. Only some panels can do that.

EDIT: Damn you, iphitus! wink

Re: Notification tray dockapp?

Thanks a lot iphitus.

Edit: strangely enough the background stays black even with alpha 255 and transparent. I guess it is bug of pekwm...

Edit2: after some testing I found the line I like:

trayer --SetDockType false --SetPartialStrut false --expand true --widthtype request --transparent true --alpha 255 --edge top --align right --margin 140 &

I copy it here, I hope it helps someone else... Yet trayer programmers could put a little more informative help...
