Boot problem with Archlinux 2007.08

Bootprocess whenn booting from CD stops and issues this message:
.....
No new files found to copy .... on media /dev/sda5
NTFS driver 2.1.28 [Flags: R/W MODULE].
NTFS volume version 3.1
The PC booted many Linux-CDs till now (i.e. Archlinux 2007.05). Harddisk partitions are: one NTFS-partition(sda1), one FAT32 partition (sda5) and some EXT3 partitions. Playing around different boot options (ide-legacy, ...) shows the same behaviour. Boot-CD is ok, it works perfectly on another PC.

Re: Boot problem with Archlinux 2007.08

I've had trouble modprobing the NTFS module on an already installed system aswell: after doing so, my system would be pretty useless and I had to press the reset button to get things sorted out. I don't know if it's possible but try to disable the NTFS-module.

Re: Boot problem with Archlinux 2007.08

The problem arises at the first boot of the cd on the way to install Archlinux. I think, the only possibilty to intervene is at the boot prompt. I found a post in the forum with a solution (hopefully) for the problem.

I'll try this later.

try adding disablemodules=ntfs to the kernel line in grub..

Re: Boot problem with Archlinux 2007.08

Is this a option I can type in after CD has bootet ? The problem arises before installation is started !
By the way, never had any problems with previous versions of ARCHLINUX.

Re: Boot problem with Archlinux 2007.08

You pass kernel options after the computer has detected a bootable CD and displays the boot prompt of it, without actually booting the OS on the CD.

Re: Boot problem with Archlinux 2007.08

That's one solution. But it would be interesting, what's the reason for this boot problem and how to solve it. There are a few people having this problem (see the other post).  Version "Don't panic"   nomen est omen, how the old latin people said wink

Re: Boot problem with Archlinux 2007.08

it seems to be a error in ntfs driver in kernel, i don't have ntfs partitions around here because i only use ARCH.
I'll release new Isos with fixed arch-addons soon, i couldn't give you a date now because my time doing arch stuff is very limited atm.
disablehooks=arch-addons should help on commandline, if archboot has not a bug there.

Re: Boot problem with Archlinux 2007.08

Good to hear that. But the proposed "disablehooks=arch-addons" doesn't work here definitly at my PC.
Thanks in advance for your work on ARCHLINUX.

I have got the same problem. The solution is to use scandisk from windows - after it has done try to install again and it should run smoothly smile. Have fun!

Re: Boot problem with Archlinux 2007.08

I have this problem too.

SCANDISK was the old disk checking utility for MS-DOS and I think it only works for FAT/FAT32 drives. The current 2000/XP/Vista tool is CHKDSK, however I've checked my NTFS partitions but the problem is still here.

Re: Boot problem with Archlinux 2007.08

I had this problem too. It was solved by following steps:
1) at initial boot prompt I entered "arch --disablehooks=arch-addons"
2) it boots normally and I got virtual console prompt. When I tried running "/arch/setup", I found my hard drive is not detected. Then I executed "hwdetect --load-modules" in a separate virtual console. I again did "/arch/setup" and this time everything ran smoothly.

hope it helps.

Yes, it really helps. Thank you! It seems that tpowa's advice was lacking those "--" in front of "diablehooks" smile
