system crash!!!

today i had 3 system crashes!!!!

I update arch linux every 2 days!!!!
computer athlon xp 200+, 256 ddr pc3200, hdd wd 80GB.

I hadn't had a crash since i installed arch, and there were 3 today.

First crash:

running: gnome 2.6, 2 terminals, firefox, 2 gedit, glade, dgui-qt(which runs slowly in gnome and top shows that it has 4 different pids each eating 24 Mb of memory) .

second :

kde, xmms, firefox, dcgui-qt.

after this crash i uninstalled dcgui-qt and dclib
third:
kde , firefox(I was writing a report about the first 2 crashes).
after this I uninstalled firefox and reinstalled it.

Now I'm using xfce.

Re: system crash!!!

the pattern i see is:

it happens with firefox or dcgui-qt

instead of firefox, you can try to use mozilla

sorry, no other ideas

Re: system crash!!!

What kind of "crash"? Is it just X or is the whole system gone? Does your keyboard still work (numlock wink, does ctrl+alt+backspace gets you out of X? What happens after waiting for 15 minutes?

What kernel?
Any closed source drivers (e.g. nvidia or radeon)?

What were the last things that you updated? Or in other words, what is different in the unstable system compared with when it was stable?

Does it happen without firefox running?

If possible, bind some key to xkill and when the system hangs start killing apps (firerfox) until the situation is normal again.

Are you running xfs?

Last, but not least: Does disabling/uninstalling the xscreensaver solve the problem?

BTW, those 4 pids with all 24 Mb are just multiple threads of one program and they share the memory, nothing to worry about (firefox has it too)

Re: system crash!!!

I had such problems when my CPU was overheating... check that the heatsink isn't full of dust and stuff...

I always blame hardware first, because GPL'd software is so reliable. :-D

Re: system crash!!!

1) I've tried several combinattions (ctrl+alt+f1, ctrl+alt+delete)  and did not work, the mouse did not eithr(except once (the 3rd time) when i could move the mouse but the keyboard was frozen)

2)I did not wait 15 minutes(I have a school project to do (hate it)).

3) kernel 2.6.6
video card geforce 2 mx400, thw driver is nvidia-1.0.5336-3.pkg.tar.gz
4) it is hard to tell what were the last things I updated since I do a pacman -Syu very often(every 1 or 2 days).
but I install some games(tuxracer, bomberclone, bumprace, gav, dopewars(but i uninstalled it), lincity(uninstalled as well), luola, pathological , xbill, xrally ). This is almost the succesion in which they were installed.

5) I don't knpw if it happens with or without firefox(I'm no trieing to be rude, onestly), but every time the system crashed frefox was running.

6)

If possible, bind some key to xkill and when the system hangs start killing apps (firerfox) until the situation is normal again.

I don't know how to do that!!!
7) I'm not running xfs.

8) I will try unninstalling xscreensaver after I finnish thw homework.

Thank you for your prompt reply !!!!

Re: system crash!!!

Look in /var/log/pacman.log to see what packages were updated. Looking at the Arch website I wouldn't say that anything critical was updated. Did you change anything else too?

Try ctrl+alt+backspace, but if num-/capslock don't work then there isn't much hope. I use Fluxbox, and there it's easy to bind keys. See http://xfce.org/index.php?page=document … #shortcuts for how to do it in Xfce4.

Kernel 2.6.6 isn't rock stable, you could try 2.6.5, although that update is from the 10th, so if the problems started today that shouldn't really help.

I don't know how to do that!!!

every X has xkill starting when you press [ctrl][alt][esc] (so no need to make bindings by hand :-) ).... then, if you press with xkill started to a window, the app that owns it will be killed - pressing the combination again will escape xkill without killing anything

Re: system crash!!!

if you experience unreproduceable crashes
think also about the power supply (it can drive you crazy)
that was for me 2 times the cause of such crashes

Re: system crash!!!

It is not hardware !!!!

I had another one (after I opend my case, clean the dust off check all the power cables ....).
But this time I could move the mouse(although the mouse pointer was the busy one) .

running
xfce, firefox

after 15 minutes nothing happened

Re: system crash!!!

have you changed your power supply? try an other one
it's only a guess but that can be a cause of such locks

Re: system crash!!!

it can't be the power supply
If it were that it would have reseted !!!

I've reinstalled the nvidia drivers(I installed the ones from the nvidia web site ).

Re: system crash!!!

it can be that your pc is reseted if your power supply is out of order
but it can only hang too
don't know why but i experienced that problem
while playing ut2004 i got a new power supply and now the pc works perfect

perhaps power supply is the wrong term for what i mean
in german it is called netzteil
i mean the thing that is connected to your mainboard to give it power

Re: system crash!!!

you mean the power generator (a cable that gives power is plugged into it ) .

I don't think is that, but I will give a call to the firm  I bought it from.

please tell me how to use tune2fs
i did:

tune2fs -c 5 -C 5 /dev/hda2
hda2=/dev/discs/disc0/part2 the root filesystem.

Re: system crash!!!

Also how powerful is the power supply?
If it can't give the other components enough power, it might crash.
Dunno if this is true, just a guess.  :?

Re: system crash!!!

what I think !!!!

the first time it crashed because of dcgui-qt.

my system did not check for errors (tune2fs not set), so the crash affected every program running.

please tell me your opinion.

Are you sure? Nothing happens with Xfree 4.3 if I don't bind it manually, and I'm quite sure it doesn't do anything with 4.4 either. Perhaps your window manager does it for you, but my Fluxbox doesn't anyway.

If you can still move the mouse it means the system isn't really crashed, nor X, but some program is (perhaps trying to drag down X too). If it's a hardware issue then the system would crash, not only some program. At least that's what I think. If you have multiple computers then run sshd and when it crashes look what's hanging or happening and kill some programs from another pc. If you have file corruption because of the first crash, then indeed that can cause other programs to hang. What filesystem do you have? If it's ext, make sure that you have an "1" at the end of the root mount line in fstab. E.g. /dev/hda3  /  ext3  noatime  0 1
