Hi all!
I saw similar problems elsewhere in the forum and in the mailing list, but reading them and trying those ideas did not work. So I am hoping that someone has some more recent ideas, thus I will describe the problem again.
I updated my Arch box to the latest versions of everything, which included removing hotplug and switching on hwdetect. hwdetect loads a dozen or so ALSA sound modules which all seem to be reasonable to my eye:
$ lsmod

snd_ens1371 21856 1
snd_cmipci 32928 1
snd_ac97_codec 95136 1 snd_ens1371

snd_opl3_lib 9600 1 snd_cmipci

The only problem is -- nothing somes out of my speakers any more. Yes, I am in the audio group, yes, the speakers are plugged in correctly -- everything worked before the upgrade. Even now, when trying to play an MP3 audio file with mplayer, there is no error message and I see that mplayer thinks it plays the song.
I have tried playing around with alsaconf, alsactl and alsamixer, also tried to mute/unmute thing in kmix, but nothing works and the speakers stay silent.
Any idea are greatly welcome.

Hi,
I don't really understand what You mean ... If You ask whether I tried runnung alsaconf, then yes, I tried, but it did not help. If You say that You tried it too and it didn't work either, then there are two of us with the same problem ... anyone else joining the club?:)
So even if it is claimed that udev (togehter with hwdetect or lshwd) can replace hotplug, this is only true modulo some bugs (or just very hard-to-find configuration options). Is there some canonical way of detecting what should be changed/added?
Any hints are still very warmly appreciated,
Jan

Have you checked alsamixer?

Hi all!
As always, most of the problem was between the chair and keyboard. Namely, it appears that there are two soundcards in my computer, one ens1371 and one onboard. Hwdetect detected the latter one correctly and loaded the correct module snd_cmipci (together with snd_ens1371). After plugging my speakers to the onboard hole, sound was available. However, I wanted to use the ens1371 card, so
MOD_BLACKLIST=(snd_cmipci)
in /etc/rc.conf solved my problem. I still do not know why I did not have sound from the second sound card with both snd_cmipci and snd_ens1371 loaded, but at least I have now the computer working the way I like.
Best regards,
Jan

Yes, ive checked it, i have absolutely same problem with my SB128 card. I was stucked with it last night:( i dont know, have tried all the solutions over forum etc, but nothing works, now, i have conf. for OSS and aumix can raise the volume after hwdetect --load-modules is made. But I have do the configurations of mixer every start:(, in other forum they wrote that is the alsa bug and they will not work on it! And the bugreport is closed. heelp!
Nothing is perfect, just Linux and me :-D

To revive this old thread, I have EXACTLY the same problem today on my SB128 (CT4730). Despite hours of googling, and even trying the replacement of ALSA with OSS, which was reported to have worked, I have cannot get sound out of my speakers. I have given up and ordered a new emu101k based sound card - hopefully THAT works. The original card works just fine - I have Windows dual booted on the box and it uses it with no issues - all the sound I want. So it is definitely a software issue, but not one that anyone seems to know how to solve!
