I would really like a battery monitor, cpu monitor, etc. in the slit. I don't even know where to begin though, what do I need to do?

I'm very sorry for this reply even as I type it, but that's an awesome topic title - so dirty sounding...
Unfortunately, I know nothing about flux, so I'll leave it to the pros to reply with real content.

I use gkrellm as my system monitor which has a switch to the withdrawn mode, which puts it in the slit. I could be wrong, but I think the application has to support being sent into the slit.
Why did they name it slit anyway O.o?

gkrellm -w or any dockapp made for windowmaker goes to the slit there are a few in aur/community like wmix, and a ton you can build at dockapps.org.
The slit is on autohide by default, change that with fluxconf or do it manually in your ~/fluxbox/init file with
session.screen0.slit.autoHide: false
Add the dock-apps you want to start to your .xinitrc and your set.
there is also a file ~/fluxbox/slitlist that will let you change the order of the apps in the slit.
/edit
I haven't used fluxbox in a couple years, just messing with it again for a few days
the autoHide: false works but
session.screen0.slit.onTop: false
session.screen0.slit.maxOver: true
seem to do nothing, slit is always on top. let me know how it goes if you mess with it.
