KDE sound system is broken.

I'm using KDEmod. The system notifications seem to cut off a bit at the end and some don't play at all, even though I can play them in kaffeine. Got this from hwd

Multimedia audio controller
snd-emu10k1     : Creative Labs|EMU10K2 Audigy Audio Processor

The module (snd-emu10k1) is loaded. Amarok plays fine and so dies Kaffeine. How can I fix this?

I'll confirm all the above (I'm also running a Creative card - Sound Blaster OEM to be specific) and add something else to the mix:

The only way I get sound from KDE is with artsplay (it's extremely chopped off).  However, when I run Test Sound from KControl, the full test sound plays.  I checked, and artsd is running in the background...
