Remote XFCE4 desktop possible?

I was looking at XFCE4, and was curious if I can use it remotely with a VNC client (or something similar).  Has anyone done this?  I'm pretty sure I could just run X apps remotely through SSH, but somtimes it's nice to see your whole desktop.

In Gnome (on Ubuntu) there was a "Desktop Sharing" option, but I don't see one in XFCE4.  I'm guessing it's not built-in to XFCE4 and must be added as a kind of X11 service.

Doesn't it depend on the login manager? I remember when I used slim I couldn't remote because slim didn't have it.

I'd be interested in what you've used, too.

Re: Remote XFCE4 desktop possible?

I used X11vnc, works like a charm, I use ion3 but i suspect any DM/WM will work. I used the gentoo wiki: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Use_VNC_to … X_Sessions
the gentoo wiki is great for advice settings things up, just ignore the gentoo specific instructions.

Re: Remote XFCE4 desktop possible?

I have it running with TightVNC.  Just added a xstartup file to the .vnc folder in the users home directory with "startxfce4" in it (no quotes).

You used TightVNC as a server?

Yes.  vncviewer-jar (community) as the viewer.

Re: Remote XFCE4 desktop possible?

I remote into my gnome install with FreeNX. I know it has the option for KDE/GNOME/windows. I'm not sure if the XFCE is present to choose but if it is FreeNX is snappy and works great for me. You can even remote into your linux box from a windows box.

There is a wiki entry for FreeNX

Re: Remote XFCE4 desktop possible?

Create a new autostart file with this line:
Exec= /usr/bin/x11vnc -wait 50 -rfbauth /home/username/.vnc/passwd -bg -forever -o /tmp/x11vnc.log

I don't remember how you create that /home/username/.vnc/passwd file but this is how I did it in my Debian box with XFCE4. Now I am using NX server and client. It feels faster but it takes more time to log in.
