Hello,
My name is Derek and I am a distro junkie....well...now a recoverion distro junkie thanks to Arch.
My linux experience started around 1997 with a store bought Red Hat....version 5 i believe. No window manager included in it. Next came Mandrake, I am sure most of you remember the early days with winmodems and dependancy hell so MS Windows was still my main OS.
Around 2002 I was able to say "good-bye" to Windows, but every week or month or so i was installing a new distro. With the 6 month release cycle most try to keep too it seemed there was alway a new version of something to try. So for about 5 years I have been distro jumping. I have tried a countless number of distros. Most of them were very good but all had their own little problems that i couldn't solve. or a new release would come out and 99% of the time it was just easier to do a clean install starting from scratch.
The way I usually decide on a distro to try is not by reading reviews, or reading anything telling me why this distro is better the others because these are all just one persons opinion. I read the forums, I see what kinds of problems people are having and what kind of help they are being given. There was one distro about 6 months ago I downloaded the live cd/dvd and booted it.....I loved it. e17 was the default wm, I had never tried e16 or 17 and really liked what i saw. then I went to the forum....there was a person that wanted to install KDE and was asking questions about the install....the replies he recieved were mean, rude and nasty so i trashed that distro.
I started hearing about Arch and went to the forums. Problems were not all that severe and the help people were getting was just unbelievable. I remember one of the first posts I read. The person said he was fed up with arch and linux in general and was going to bsd. Not one nasty reply...in fact the replies were very helpfull and giving advice on what to do and what problems he will see with bsd. Right then I knew I wanted to try Arch.
I down loaded Arch and installed it.....then installed it again....and then again. (why ask directions when you can screw it up on your own:P ) Finally I went to the forums to look for answers to problems I was having. I never even looked at the wiki's because every time I tried that route they were never any help. I started to notice that just about ever reply to a problem the answer was given and an extra line "there is a wiki for that problem" and the link given. I went to the wiki's and found answers to just about question or problem I had.
Now for about 2 weeks I have Arch on both my desktop and laptop and feel that I have found my home after searching for nearly 10 years
So thank you EVERYONE for a great distro and the best distro for me.
If your thinking about trying Arch and reading this then I sugest you go to http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Off … tall_Guide print it and save it and you should have a flawless install. Also read the wiki about pacman that will save you a few headaches too.
Once again, thank you Arch and everyone involved in it, my distro jumping days are over!

Hi Derek, I'm not a dev, but welcome to arch! ![]()
From time to time I try out a new distro because I have so much free disk space. But mostly just out of curiosity, and I usually end up appreciating arch that much more. Even when I run across the distro that seems very cool, It's lacking something. It's just not arch! To me, arch is like an old pair of jeans. They are just very comfy! They might have a couple holes and a small rip here and there, but they're not too stiff and they don't need broken in. They just fit really good! ![]()

I could have written most of that myself, Derek. I honestly can't see myself ever using another distro as long as Arch is still around. The rolling release system means everything is always up to date, so far everything I've wanted to install (some of it pretty obscure) has been in the repos or AUR, and, as you say, the forums are the most grown-up and civilized I've come across. The fact that I've registered and posted at all says a lot, in fact; most of them, I wouldn't want to be a part of in the first place, even if I have a problem I want solved.
When I first switched to Linux about two years ago (from AmigaOS; I've never been a Windows user
), I told myself I wouldn't become a zealot, raving about how great it was to non-users. Since discovering Arch, I've found it very difficult...

Amiga?! Long live the Commodore Amiga! I miss those days.

Why, if I had a nickle every time I heard that, I'd be 25 cents in debt.
Let's just say Arch is more like wheeling back into your room at the retirement home, in between jelly chested shock pad treatments, nap time, and pamper changes at the nurses office down the hall. Personally, I got tired of Mark Shuttleworth powdering up my rear and sticking me in the crotch with his safety pins.
Welcome home, Derek! TV and Matlock is just to your left, shuffleboard to your right, and the Mylanta cabinet just behind you.

It's so cool to read how many people have found home with Arch. I'm not a power-user, I have only a couple of years of experience with automatic distros, but I've found in Arch all I've always been dreaming of. It's everything for me, the best ever (always for me) ![]()

Question: If emoticons could talk, would this one say "I know what you're thinking. "Did skoal fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum light pen, the most powerful emotigun in the world, and would blow your shades clean off, you've got to ask yourself a question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?"
muahahaha...
Oh, man, I don't think anyone remembers my mighty light pen. Hopefully, you do, brother!
I'm such a thread polluter. Please drag my posts to the recycle bin or to that doohickey dusty bin thingy yall got now under Off Topic. Speaking of Dusty...

Both. The Arch Apocalypse is upon us.
Derek, these devs are so cool, they even split up the install packages into base or current. Personally, I downloaded the base. I find it more alluring to build my classic Chevy one piece at a time, like Johnny Cash recommends.

Careful when invoking the name of Johnny Cash...he recommended building a Cadillac that way...not a Chevy.

Well said. I started with Linux (thankfully!) on Slackware, after I had Fedora on my system for one day and knew that it wasn't how I wanted to learn. I had heard that Slackware was very standards compliant and didn't hold your hand, and I'm the kind that likes to dive in. Just a couple of months ago I tried Arch and now I have two favorite distros, but Arch is pulling ahead. Pacman makes getting a system up and running just so fast.

I am new myself. And I must say thank you guys alot. I am a newbie here, but I give and owe thanks to the developers of any Linux distro or BSD OS I have ever used. You guys are simply inspirational. This distro is first class in my book. I did not used to appreciate the CLI as much until starting with vector Linux {slackware-based} This really helped get me to know the foundation.
My first distro was Redhat 5.0 - used it for work. did not like it. (2001)
Then Mandrake 9.1 in 2003 - easy at the time. alot of stuff did not work, buggy, but very nice for its time.
Xandros - my first introduction to Debian-based linux distros - This was when I first decided to leave Windows or have windows as a dualboot. (2004)
Mepis - simply the easiest and best distro to me then - was my favorite for a year. (2004 to 2005)
Vector Linux - This became my favorite distro - my first intro to slackware - super great community (2005 - present)
Ubuntu linux {linux mint} - This was the true distro that eliminated my dependency on any window apps. Very large community. Distro was very easy to use - a little bloated, but everything just works. (2005 - present)
Tried many other distros for at least 2 months such as elive, PClinuxos(very nice and easy), wolvix, knoppic, sabayon (gentoo-based nice).,....
Enter Archlinux - This is the distro I have always sought out, but did not know I needed. Now I am starting to really appreciate it. The distro is fast, but the install from repo is fast as well. Such a balance is hard to realize on the gentoo-based distros . The only other distro that rivals in terms of speed is puppy{not a complete OS}, vector linux and a few others. I started off not liking the KISS mentality and hating the CLI. I am starting to see why you folks do not want to change that.. I am becoming a believer. With every challenge resolved, I get that much closer to knowing how an OS should operate for my needs..Great job guys. Great job to the knowledgeable foks here who give a hoot about others. I shall be more actively involved in using arch from here on.
