/etc/rc.d/hal start
in kde, under media, click on cd-rom, and it informs me that it requires hal.
I was attempting to get k3b working and it refused to believe /dev/cdrom was an actual device, despite the fact that it's currently mounted!
I have no idea what could be causing this, any hints?

Have you tried uninstalling hal then reinstalling it?
pacman -Rs hal
pacman -Sy hal

you prolly need to be in right groups also.
try optical or storage.

I should have mentioned it in my original post, but yes, I removed/installed hal.
I added my user to both groups and it seems to be working perfectly, thanks a mill guys
