DVD drive

Arch is not mounting my DVD RW drive or something to that effect. My discs do not show on the desktop, and I cant burn anything. I tried all the burning programs i have (Brasero, gnomebaker, serpentine) none work. Serpentine says 'no recording drive found on your system'. Odd part is I just rebooted with a live cd in the drive and it read it fine. This leads me to believe there is a problem in Arch somewhere. I've been using Arch for quite sometime and never had this problem...other than when hal wasnt running. However hal is running and my sd cards and such still show on the desktop. Im worried I may need a new DVD drive. Any ideas on this?
