Perhaps a package you previously installed has acquired some new dependencies? Have you checked to see which of those packages you do already have installed? That may help determine the troubled package.

compiz requires gnome unless you use the --disable-gnome flag before compiling.

I thought of that.. but nothing:
[20:18 root ~]# pacman -Qs compiz
[20:18 root ~]# pacman -Qs gnome
local/fam 2.7.0-9
File Alteration Monitor - used by KDE, GNOME and others
local/libcroco 0.6.1-1
GNOME CSS2 parsing and manipulation toolkit
local/libgsf 1.14.5-1
The GNOME Structured File Library is a utility library for reading and
writing structured file formats.

What repos are you using? I can't find compiz in any of ours...
-edit- also, what does pacman -Si compiz show you? -/edit-

Ok found it.. it was emerald.. emerald depended on beryl-core, which wanted all those other packets..

Hm.. that's odd, because the beryl-core PKGBUILD in CVS only has
depends=('startup-notification' 'libxcomposite' 'libxdamage' 'libxinerama' \
'libxrandr' 'libgl' 'libpng' 'glib2')
and I don't see any gnome deps there. Does compiz, from whatever repo you're getting it, provide beryl-core?

Maybe the --debug output could give a clue. Try something like :
pacman -Su --debug |grep pulling
pacman roulette : pacman -S $(pacman -Slq | LANG=C sort -R | head -n $((RANDOM % 10)))

8:15 root ~]# pacman -Ss beryl-core
