Looks like conky.
I'm root. if you see me smile, you'd better have a backup!!

Ah yeah! It is. I got it from the repos, but when I run it, nothing happens. If I give it an -o flag to have it run in it's own window, it works.
I have fluxbox and the rox desktop going. What should I do?

Hmm, if I disable rox, it shows on my desktop ...

copy /etc/conkyrc.sample as .conkyrc to youre home
cp /etc/conkyrc.sample ~/.conkyrc
then set conky in youre .initrc (for Ex.: conky & exec fluxbox)
now restart the xserver an look how the current setup works.
In the Screenshot-Thread you can see many examples with listings.
play around about conky, it's very easy.

conky draws on the root window per default. ROX-Filer, on the other hand, creates an overlay over said root-window. Hence conky is *below* the Desktop. Same happens when you use Gnome or E17. There is no real fix to that except running conky in its own window, IIRC. Or to disable Icons. Who needs them anyway? I know I don't.
