well. i'm new to linux, hence the forum i post in
i've used fedora 3/4/6/7 briefly. and i've been running kubuntu on my laptop for a little over a month now, and liking it
i came across archlinux on the amarok website. did some reading about it, went through the repos and found that all the programs i use were available there this small? distro. anyway, iwas intrigued enough that i downloaded it last night and installed it on my test machine.
now i believe it installed, i just installed everything, and it boots, but i only get a text prompt to login. if i type startx, i get a blue backround with more command windows.
i need help, im looking at getting KDE on it, but im assuming it has xfce or gnome or something included, if i could just get a desktop environment to run it. i can bring it to my friends where i can get internet access to start installing programs. cuz right now im lost, i had to change the mobo in the system to get through the install, and then the whole test setup phased me, im starting to feel like i picked the wrong distro, but it inspired me enough to try, im sure theres potential with it
thanks for the help
serge

http://wiki.archlinux.org/ will have all of the answers for stuff like this...
Check out this link for setting up X:

and this one for setting up KDE:

Hope that answers your questions!

it comes with no kde, no gnome. just install kde with pacman -S kdebase or gnome with pacman -S gnome-desktop and youll have a full suite of programs at your disposal.
or read the above post cause he beat me to the punch

Always check the wiki, you can't believe how many things you'll find there. And as Misfit138 suggested, check the Beginner's Guide, it's the best starting point for about everything. And good luck

"You can install kde and gnome from the CD as well. "
No you can't. They're part of [extra] while only [current] packages get on CD.

Thanks for the correction. I deleted the bogus information.
I just checked the CD. No gnome or kde on CD.
There is icewm and Xorg though. I suppose if you wanted a simple graphical display that would do.

Really, don't delete your posts when someone proves you wrong. It makes it hard to follow the discussion.
