Re: Widescreen: for and against

I'm jealous of you monitors sad. However, I'm very satisfied with my old 17" CRT running at 1280x1024.

These monitors are godlike.  I have a 20 inch here at work.... a guy in the next office over has dual 24 inch ones.

One of the best monitors out there.... so yeah, go widescreen.

i can vouch for Dell Monitors. i have a 21" Trinitron Clone from them i bought with a system back in 1998. i am using to this day, right now!. and its as crisp as the day i set it up. i would go with a wide screen, for the obvious reasons, if ya have the bread to pop for it.

oops!, i see im a tad late! lol. gl with that new WS wink

Re: Widescreen: for and against

@scarney: I used to have one of those old Dell Trinitrons from around 1998. A friend is still using it as his primary monitor.

Congrats on the new monitor dibble! I've got a more low-cost 20" Acer WS and I love it. I'm sure the Dell will be great.

Re: Widescreen: for and against

Very informative thread.

I just have some questions for my own curiousity.

I was wondering, if you don't watch movies on your computer monitor and don't really play games i.e. first person shooters, etc. is it worth getting a widescreen?

If you mostly code using a text editor, browse the web, use the GIMP and read and write PDFs are you more suited to use a normal aspect ratio (4:3, 5:4)?

Re: Widescreen: for and against

IMnsHO Widescreen is always nicer. Eyes move horizontally more easily than vertically. Having space for many windows next to each other is a lot nicer than having space for only one at a time.

Of course even an old 20" CRT will have nicer picture quality than a new cheap widescreen LCD.

I've got a Dell 20,1" widescreen (2005FPW) and I love it. It's especially nice to watch movies on. A regular 4:3 screen shows more black than actual movie, this doesn't happen (as much) on widescreen monitors, although you'll still have some of the black bars.

My screen suffers from backlight bleeding though, it's worth to go out and see the screen you want in action. I don't notice any ghosting at all when playing games, but the backlight bleeding is very noticable. This only occurs when the screen near the top/bottom backlight is completely black, i.e. during movies.

I got the same screen and the same problem. Seems like about 70% of the screens had alot of backlight. The newer 2007FPW seems better tho. I also have a problem that I can't adjust the brighnes as mutch as I want for some reason.

Exept for that, I love this monitor. I hate TN panels for anything exept hardcore gaming. (and price)

Re: Widescreen: for and against

I use one at work, not sure about the dimensions but its a cheapo by the name of Hanns.G

Personally for programming, etc. very useful but I hate maximising windows, there's just too much stuff on the screen to take in that way. I tend to have a bunch of windows open next to each other to fill up all that space. Certainly a better option to having two separate monitors side by side. However, it feels weird having a widescreen (although when I go home after work my 17" does look pretty small in comparison tongue i'd say go for  it so long as you need it.

Also, not sure how movies look but I imagine the widescreen probably makes it look quite nice (although dvd's that usually take up the whole screen might be stretched or be surrounded by black void).

Re: Widescreen: for and against

Widescreen is indeed better for movies. And for the rest, it doesn't change much imo. So I think it's better smile
