Turn off cdrom drive?

Hey guys!

In order to save some battery life, I'm looking for a way to turn off my cd drive. On Windows I have a systray applet that lets me turn off the power of the "optical drive". Do you guys know anyway to do this?

I tried that, but didn't work actually:

issuing sleep command
HDIO_DRIVE_CMD(sleep) failed: Input/output error
