arch hangs on boot with highpoint 2310 card installed

I couldn't  install 2007.08 with the card installed. It booted as far as loading the disk controller stuff then:

sata_mv: PCI ERROR; PCI IRQ cause=0x00000000

scrolls all all down the screen and I have to reboot.

I installed arch without the card plugged in and then when I try to boot with 2.6.22 or 2.6.23 from unstable it only gets as far as

initrd /boot/kernel26mm.img
[Linux-initrd @ 0x1fe63000, 0x18c37c bytes]

then hangs.

Any ideas?

Here's the rest of my hardware setup if it helps:

3.06GHz Celeron D
DFI Infinity Dark (Intel P965 chipset)
Nvidia 7100GS PCI-e  (in first 16x slot)
HPT 2310 PCI-i set up with raid 5 array (in 2nd 16x slot) (tried swapping with graphics but made no difference)
Boot drive 300gb SATA plugged in to the motheboard controller
