Hi! i think this will be interesting... i for example use:
AVI's, MPG's, etc: Smplayer
DVD Discs: VLC (best working menu's)
It will be interesting too if somebody have a mplayer command with parameters with best settings for decoding filters such as deblocking, deringing, postprocessing, etc, to share with us

In regards to deblocking there's this script I have to confess though I keep the pkgbuild up to date I don't really use it but plenty of people like it. Its actively being developed its only a script but has more options than I understand.
Its h264enc in aur but has the options you mention also prints the mencoder command afterwards. also would imagine xvidenc(Same developer) would have the options but as said I don't even know what deringing means
As for playback I agree have both Vlc and Mplayer depends on use.

Examples of deringing... i think i see the feature in smplayer... but dont remember now...

Pretty simple here:
KMPlayer most of the time. But it the rare case that it doesn't work, like on some 3gp files, or when the aspect tag doesn't match the actual video size, I use VLC. I also do some testing with FFPlay. I never use any of the other features you asked about about.

Like I said I know that script gives you all these types of options, easy to choose and adjust then just before starting to re-encode it'll print the mencoder command its about to use. Though now I know what deringing is now perhaps next time h264enc gives me the option I can make an informed decision rather than my default return.
I suspect it'll help while you work out the correct command as from what I can see the mencoder command ends up about 3 lines long.

mplayer for videos and sometimes DVD.
I usually use xine to watch DVDs because I can use the DVD menus.

Mplayer for videos (hdtv tv recordings), xine predominately for DVD's. Xine for the menu ability and I like the zoom feature.

The most annoying thing is finding out which title is the main one.
And also which languages / subtitles are available.
I like having a dvd menu for these (especially first one).
But maybe I'm missing something. IIRC, it's possible to display the tracks using lsdvd or some other tools. But I like checking out the dvd menus anyway

Kaffeine for DVDs.
Mplayer from the commandline for some DVDs.
Kmplayer for integration with konqueror and most basic "double click" style watching and listening.
VLC for viewing isos.
I've played with Smplayer some, too, and it's extremely nicely laid out - it seems like they've spent a little time considering UI. It just hasn't replaced any of my standbys yet. I like codeine a lot, too, in concept, but I've never figured out how to pass it non-deprecated deinterlacing options, and don't want to spend the time to learn how when I'm mostly happy with the other options I've listed.
