Can't install Arch64

I've tried doing a base install and an ftp install of Don't Panic.  No success in either case.  I get to the point where pacman begins to install the packages it's either copied from cd or downloaded, and a kernel panic ensues.

The drive being installed to is a pata drive, connected right to the motherboard.  I do have 2 sata drives on a via 8237, but nothing should be installing to them.  Using ide-legacy doesn't make any difference, nor does noapic, or pci=routeirq.

If I disable acpi (acpi=off), the sata drives aren't detected properly.  Multiple attempts are made to read the drives, which takes forever.

Until this morning, the drive in question was the OS drive in my Myth master backend.  I'd be surprised if it was suddenly defective.

I know this is sparse on specifics smile  If someone could point me in the right direction for what specifics would be useful, I'd gladly provide them.
