Have a Dell D420 with Bluetooth enabled onboard. I've installed the bluez-utils and -libs (versions 3.12-1), started dbus and then bluetooth. Out put from dmesg shows:
iain@expat-d420 ~ $ dmesg | grep -i blue
Bluetooth: Core ver 2.11
Bluetooth: HCI device and connection manager initialized
Bluetooth: HCI socket layer initialized
Bluetooth: L2CAP ver 2.8
Bluetooth: L2CAP socket layer initialized
Bluetooth: HIDP (Human Interface Emulation) ver 1.2
Bluetooth: RFCOMM socket layer initialized
Bluetooth: RFCOMM TTY layer initialized
Bluetooth: RFCOMM ver 1.8
When I run hciconfig I get nothing back:
iain@expat-d420 ~ $ sudo hciconfig -a
iain@expat-d420 ~ $
Modules seem to be laoded up just fine:
iain@expat-d420 ~ $ lsmod | grep -i blue
bluetooth 46820 5 rfcomm,hidp,l2cap
Nothing in the wiki to point out how to get this working correctly, only BT mouse and headset. any pointers to how I can get this working correctly?
Iain.

I used to have to 'hciconfig hci0 reset' anytime I wanted to use bluetooth.

Hmm, the problem here, it would seem, is that the device is not getting created. In any case, here's the result of that command:
iain@expat-d420 ~ $ sudo hciconfig hci0 reset
Can't get device info: No such device
Iain.

Have you tried:
# hciattach tty0 socket
?

Hadn't...here we go:
iain@expat-d420 ~ $ sudo hciattach tty0 socket
BCSP initialization timed out
