my nephew built me a custom kernel awhile back. he's out of town for a few weeks and can't help me. did pacman -Syu to upgrade. when i reboot could not startx. everything else appears ok. tried to start x from terminal and it says nvidia driver component has version 100.14.11 but the nvidia kernel module version does not match. i believe it was 1.0.9755.1. did some research and found my var/cache pacman/pkg/nvidia-100.14.11-4.pkg.tar.gz file. if i use pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/nvidia-100-14.11-4.pkg.tar.gz as the command would that take care of my problem or is there a better way to do this? thank you for any advice.

Downgrading to your old nvidia driver should do the trick, that is if it's only the nvidia driver causing the problem. Downgrade, and post back.
Also in your /etc/pacman.conf
theres a blacklist option, put nvidia in there if upgrading it is break your X. DO THIS AFTER YOUR DOWNGRADE

problem solved. instead of downgrading the nvidia utils i upgraded to the new nvidia driver so that both version matched. everything is now working fine. thank you
