Pacman No Longer Allows FTP Sources

My problem is that pacman does not connect to FTP sources from the list. Previously it was working fine (over the weekend when I installed Arch and was using pacman to get all sorts of lovely programs).

Two days ago it decided to randomly stop connecting to FTP sources giving the following complaint:

error: failed retrieving file 'current.db.tar.gz' from ftp.belnet.be : Network is unreachable
error: failed to synchronise current: Network is unreachable

I have tried pinging the source and I get a response. I have also tried many of the FTP sources and they all do the same thing. For now I can get by using one of the 2 http sources but that means downloading all the way from USA or from Russia with love. Please, can anyone shed some light on why pacman has mutated into this horrible, uncontrollable beast for me? Thanks.

Re: Pacman No Longer Allows FTP Sources

Are you using XferCommand ?
If yes, try disabling it, if no, try enabling it smile

Re: Pacman No Longer Allows FTP Sources

Tried both, and neither makes any difference sad. Previously it had been working with Xfer commented out anyway.

Re: Pacman No Longer Allows FTP Sources

Can you download from ftp sources outside pacman e.g. with wget or whatever?

Incidentally, you can use http with belnet, and many other mirrors - check the wiki Mirrors page for details.

Okay, seems a bit of a silly request but can you supply an ftp file link for me so I can test wget? Thanks.

Re: Pacman No Longer Allows FTP Sources

Okay tried this and I get this back:

wget ftp://ftp.gnu.org/READMEQApplication::postEvent: Unexpected null receiver
QApplication::postEvent: Unexpected null receiver
QApplication::postEvent: Unexpected null receiver
QApplication::postEvent: Unexpected null receiver
QApplication::postEvent: Unexpected null receiver
QApplication::postEvent: Unexpected null receiver
QApplication::postEvent: Unexpected null receiver

This just repeats over and over again ad infinitum. What the hell is wrong with my stupid computer...

Okay I actually think thats the evil doings of keytouchd.

When I try wget ftp://ftp.gnu.org/README it just says this:

[dave@hades ~]$ wget ftp://ftp.gnu.org/README
--19:15:41--  ftp://ftp.gnu.org/README
           => `README'
Resolving ftp.gnu.org... 140.186.70.20
Connecting to ftp.gnu.org|140.186.70.20|:21... failed: Connection timed out.
Retrying.

--19:18:51--  ftp://ftp.gnu.org/README
  (try: 2) => `README'
Connecting to ftp.gnu.org|140.186.70.20|:21...

It just keeps doing this. So I still cant download from ftps... sad

Re: Pacman No Longer Allows FTP Sources

Do you have a firewall active ?

If that's the case disable it and try again.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: Pacman No Longer Allows FTP Sources

I have tried disabling the firewall to no avail. Still pacman does not connect to the ftp sites.

I can browse to the ftp sites through firefox and download packages from them that way, and I can also ping the ftps and get a response. It just seems to be pacman that has trouble. I have not changed any settings on my router since I started using arch and it worked fine for a few days using the ftp and now does not so i'm totally clueless...

You coudn't get wget to work before. Does it work now? After you disabled the firewall?
